My recently rebuilt 202 seems to be burning a lot of oil, even for a new engine. It burns a puff of smoke on start up, and sometimes continues for 10-20 seconds. It will also do a puff when I park the car for 5 minutes going to the shops or something and then when I start it to drive off, although it doesn't do it all the time. I've done around 200-250km and it's burned from the full to the add line on the dipstick twice, which is either 1L or 2L of oil all up. A lot of what I imagine is oily smoke comes out the rocker cover breathers if disconnected, so I'd be thinking the pcv would be sucking in a lot of oil. Running in I've tried to load it up without labouring it, and I haven't revved it particularly hard. It's only done 250km at the most, but it seems odd it would be burning it on startup with new valve stem seals. I'm thinking the valve guides are worn out? They weren't done with the rest of the engine as the head itself was only 5000km old with bronze guides. What would it be worth to get new guides if thats needed? Also I'm definitely thinking teflon valve stem seals this time, unless they're only a ring that goes around the valve, as the rubber ones don't seam to do much. Any ideas?

What colour is the smoke from the exhaust?

When warm and you let it idle for a few minutes then rev it does it smoke? and what colour?

White with a tinge of blue and when its warm and I give a quick rev it'll puff out the same blue tinged smoke, but it won't do it every time.

White smoke is steam.
Blue smoke is oil.

It maybe possible that you have water and oil sitting in the exhaust system.
Some motors are heavy oil users till they settle in and I would not worry too much if oil consumption is high for the first 1000km or so it it was rebuilt properly just keep an eye on it.
FYI I have seen a 308 near empty the sump from sydney to enterance freeway driving with no ill effects.

Would the water and oil still be in there though after its been running for a while and warmed up? I guess I'll just have to give it 1000km and see what happens.

If you only been doing short trips then yes it is possible as the exhaust system has to get the temp up to fully evaporate, not just the motor.

Smoke on startup that goes away after short while is the classic symptom of bad guides so definitely check them. Having said that, a fresh engine really shouldn't be producing any visible blow-by so you may have ring seal issues as well.
Edit: a mild 202 doesn't make enough power to hurt itself so don't be shy about bedding in the rings; find some hilly roads and give it full throttle, full load and full revs. Drive it like you hate it.

Well I've now sold the car, but before I did I listened to your advice and went out and basically thrashed it for 10 minutes. Got rid of any visible blowby and it had never run better. Anyway I'd just like to say thanks to everyone for all your advice for my seemingly endless string of 202 questions and problems over the last year or so. Cheers everyone :D
