Gday Suxgas,

I've contacted WSID to see if there is any chance of hiring the track in April some time to hold another private day... Maybe this will be the NSW leg of the torana nationals!?

Have a look at : http://www.gmh-toran...showtopic=43385 - for more info.

The problem i have is last time, having cars that run Sub 11s was not allowed, and i want to research into how we can, and what the costs are to run cars quicker than 11s so that people like yourself can come along.
I know that the forum doesnt have the funds to offer tow money, prizes or even trophies ( and most members didnt want to run a DYO bracket as it would bite into racing time for everyone).

I'm going to talk to John Henman and see what the costs / possibilities are.

Would you, and anyone else you know with similar cars like to be part of that kind of "cruisy" day if it were to be organised?
I'd personally love to see you guys there, especially as part of the forum and some *AWESOME* hardware as well!

Cheers!

Hey Tiny,

Could always make the Sydney one the Inaugural Torana Drag Nationals.

WSID is hands down a better track than what we have down here, and is kinda central for QLDers and Victorians... I'd be happy to help promote it from down here, 'leak' it to Street Machine etc.

If i get this new job, i might be able to meet lots of potential sponsors as well.

That begs the question, One sponsor might 'donate' enough to offset the costs to allow faster cars to run?

it's a definite possiblity Matt!

With the drag nationals, are we suggesting a full blown race meet like the Nostalgia drags?
Proper DYO racing with prize money, sponsorhip, advertising, spectators and the likes?
Because if that is the thought, I spoke with John Henman after last meeting and he gave me a ballpark cost of $80,000 cost to get WSID to run the meet.

Then we would have ot advertise it to recoup the costs, sell tickets to spectators etc, And of course there would be insurance concerns to think about.

That was the reason i shyed away from holding a BIG event like that.
I thought the idea of the drag nationals ( at the moment) would be to:
Hire WSID in Sydney, Willowbank, Heathcote or Calder?, and of course Kwinana and hold "private hires" where all passes were logged into a spreadsheet and could be compared.
Organise a DYO Bracket at each track, and/OR different classes so that everyone knew what they were going to be up against, Then of course the days run and result tallied.

The days would not have to be on the same day, but once all the days have been run, then overall winners / classes etc could be awarded with small trophies awarded to the overall winners, with the winners of the particular event getting their trophies on the day.

Anyhow, that's the info i;ve got, Let's see what happen when WSID gets back to us!

Cheers!

That's true tinks!

Which is also why i was thinking of a multi-state event with the results tallied by some poor un-suspecting bastard ( probably me! ) with an overall GMH-Torana champion.

That way people dont have to tow or take time away from work to get out there and have some fun!

Cheers!

I reckon state by state events with overall National winners would be the way to go.

Each state runs their own day with state awards on offer. The winners in each state are then compared to their counterparts to find the national champs.

This gives each competitor a chance at winning something and not just competing for the overall title. This would encourage higher participation numbers whilst reducing the amount of work involved for one person in tallying up the results.

Trophies are cheap (about $10-$15 each). If each we charge an extra $5 per person on top of what the track requires this will cover the cost of trophies easily. Not only that but if we get a couple of sponsors on board to put up a gift voucher or whatever these can be used as prizes.

The format of the QLD drag day last year worked well and was not a lot of hard work, just a bit of organising and contacting various parties to get involved. To go national the only change would be to submit the winners times to the national register and then award the trophies.

If this is something we are going to do this year i.e the nationals then we need to formalise the classes and categories asap so that each state drag day is on the same page. We also need to start engaging other Torana groups i.e. clubs and forums to spread the word. I know that in QLD if we relied purely on GMH-T members we would struggle to get the 30 cars needed to hire the track. I dunno if the same applies for the other states regarding GHM-T numbers but in my opinion, to be a truly national Torana event it needs to open to all Torana's.

If the event is to be specifically for the members here it wouldnt take much, for the QLD event for example, to exclude non ghm-t members to be eligible for the National title. The QLD Drag Day would still have its winners but only the times run by GMH-T members would be counted for the nationals. I can see little dramas with that format though like old mate who wins the state event, isnt a member and doesnt go into the running for the quickest torana category....... I hope that makes sense.

Thats just my take on it anyway (and its late, and Im tired and I need to go to bed and I probably havnt thought it enough..... well thats my excuse anyway :) )

Yes matt, we know you guys from down south are a little slow, but 0.2! :tease:

Does that mean we have to give WA 3 hours? ( or 2 if it's not daylight saving) :tease: :tease:

BigT - what you described is exactly what i had in mind!

Well done :)

Matt, you are gonna need all the help and handicaps you can get. This year I WILL be racing the UC, by hook or by crook. You won the bet the last year by forfeit, this time around you will have to work for it !!

Ok, so next question is, is the National title open to all who compete on a state level or just GMH-T members?

Next we need to come up with a class/bracket set.

Matty, are you guys in a financial position to do the trophy thing in Vic?

Who is going to look after WA?

I know, lots of questions but hey, while we are on roll, lets get this sorted.

I was thinking about this today (in my brayn) :blink2:
Terrific idea but a logistical nightmare.
Get all the way to N.S.W, driving or towing a tandem, and it rains? :dontknow:

Big T's nailed it I reckon.

Though there would have to be room to move in each state regarding rain. E.g set another date.

Regarding heat, (like Heathcote a couple of years ago) TOUGH! You choose where you live :tease:

And when you want to race !! Notice how the next available date for WSID is waaaay off in July? Convenient huh !! :<_<: @tiny ...hehehehehe....

QLD is looking like it will be around the same date i.e. late July. This allows plenty of time to organise and get the numbers up.

A rain out will mean exactly what you said Rob, the event will take place on the next available date. So long as it is sometime in 2010 we are laughing.

I would run a state by state sytem and tag it on to an already existing drag meet. Then the top 32 from each category that is decided on qualify for the national event.

If you tag the national event on to an existing national meet then the existing sponsors may cough up for travelling costs etc.

Then if it is really successfull then you can look at having a stand-alone national Torana meet.

If you keep it to 2 or 3 different categories then it shouldn't be too hard to slot in to existing meets ??

Maybe the following categories :

1. Silhouette - as long as it looks like a Torana.

2. Modified Street - Street legal Toranas with any driveline combination

3. Street - Street legal Toranas with the original factory configuration but modified in any way.

You're on Tony! On like Donkey Kong! If my Torana doesn't make it... I'll have to take the daily like you did last year... HAHA! *Looks over at the ute*

Our Problem down here is, we can't hire the track on our own, which means a lot of people say they are coming, then opt out at the last minute cos they haven't had to pay a deposit or anything like that. So it looks like we have 40 people coming, then end up with 15 showing up (Always seems to get extreme weather on our DD's down here too!)

Brodomo made up a couple of trophies in the past off his own back, and that was awesome of him! We could look into buying some, and make people 'enter' ($5 or something) to be part of the trophy's and fun. We kinda need helpers though, its hard when you want to run the show, but also race your car as much as possible!

Great interest gents :) Loving this discussion!

Yep, the Sydney drag day is locked in for July 10th.... Mid winter.. as long as the rain holds out ( hey.. who thought we'd be HOPING for a drought!) and we can get traction then Yeee Har! we're on!

I'm thinking we have some 'pull' with a few companies and sponsors of the site, and if anyone knows of any trophy makers who might like to assist us with fair priced ( Not Free!) trophies for the day then i would be keen to know.
I would like to think that:

* To do this right each entrant - competing or not - would be agreeable to pay an additional $5 to $10 to cover the trophies and transport costs for them.
* We could have 4 volunteers at each meeting to do a rotating roster on the laptop to fill out each racer's times and register them toward the drag day. I say 4 people as it would not be fair to the organisers (who also want to race! Poor Me!!) to have to sit there ALL day at time-cards and just keep up with the typing and not see any racing!
* I am going to ask WSID if they have any way of "dumping" a spreadsheet of runs so that we can tally at a later time who ran what and when.
* Have to organise Dial Your Own racing - and in the different categories - to ensure that everyone has a fair go at it

One concern that is starting to nag at my mind is that the other racers on the day may not be keen on losing out on track time, to allow the drag nationals to run the DYO racing.

We would need to clarify early, that these events are part of this overall event, and that we HAVE to run Dial Your Own racing to find overall winners. I dont want to see any persons, Especially friends of forum members come out to race, pay the full whack, and only get half a day's racing.

We may need to keep the classes simple: - Street, Modified, Ladies.
The best thing with DYO is that someone driving a Burgundy AU falcon stocker, can beat someone driving a mid 11sec drag car in DYO racing due to consistency.

Also another thing that popped into my mind - WSID has an 11.0sec cut-off at our private trackhire days, so that means if someone runs an 8 at say Heathcote event, then we cant compare that to the people running at WSID! Argh!! headaches!!

ANYWAY!!!

I still think this can be sorted out, Over to you guys!

Cheers :)

A question that was posed in the NSW thread was:

Is the 'Torana drag nationals' open to other makes and models of vehicle or is the intention actually the 'gmh-torana.com.au drag nationals'?

IMO 'Torana Drag nationals', is only open to a Torana, they don't have to be on the Forums. Just have to register with us to 'go on the list'

I'm thinking, for TDN2010, we'll just keep it Super Simple.

Torana Drag Nationals Victorian Champion (Street) - Drove to the track, Street Tyres etc

Torana Drag Nationals Victorian Champion (Modified) - Trailered, Slicks, Open exhaust, 'race trim'

Then maybe something fun as well, best R/T, etc?

Open only to a torana.... does that mean i gotto put "budgie" on the back seat with us to qualify for entry?

I like super simple classes, and i was thinking about these classes:

Street - as you mentioned
Modified - as you mentioned
Ladies - to encourage the ladies to give it a go - in any vehicle that's entered ( again the DYO being the great equaliser)

With other fun trophies BY STATE:
Best Reaction Time R/T - ( No Whale-iants here Rob!)
Quickest ET on the day
Closest pairing ( like the dead heat at heathcote on the first ( or was it second?) drag day
Racer's Choice - The most spectacular on the day as chosen by the other racers
Of course... Wooden Spoon!

Then for the national prizes:
Quickest overall ET (this is going to be a problem when comparing Sydney racers to other "unlimited" tracks raced at)
Fastest pass - Fastest Mph
Best Reaction Time
GMH-T Choice ( maybe a poll online, maybe admins choice... Dunno have to think about this one!)
Wooden Spoon Overall.
What about some Non-Torana trophies? Maybe a couple of classes as above but for non toranas... Quickest ET,RT,Mph - non-torana?

Just thinking because we have ALOT of members without toranas who would like to compete i think!

So what are the restrictions on the Sydney race day?
I'm keen to race & I don't mind the format.
I don't think we will need to worry to much about prize money as I think the big name racers will get some decent magazine coverage.
Looking forward to July bring on the racing!

hi Big Block.

Unfortunately for a Sydney private hire, they limit the cars to Slower than 11.0 sec passes.
This is an ANDRA imposed limit i'm told because completely unlicenced drivers were hopping in to Super Sedan class cars and racing. Basically this driver swapping caused a change in the restrictions due to the obvious insurance liabilities!

More info can be found in this thread: http://www.gmh-toran...opic=43385&st=0

Cheers mate
