do i need to install the roof lining before the front windscreen goes in on the hatch? I presume the hatch window can go in at any stage?

Yes. I have heard of a retrofit method where you can make the hood lining non-dependent on the windscreen, but I've never seen it. Might be worth some inquiries.

It is probably best to fit the headlining first, especially if it is a new one, as they normally require a bit of trimming after you get it all nicely into place. I glued mine around the edges with contact adhesive. Makes it easier, and to get a nice tight looking fit, but, the lining could probably be installed after by poking it into the window seal. The other way is some mix of how new cars are done (solid stiffener fixed along the windscreen head). Like I said, have heard of it, but haven't seen it done, but worth looking into.
