I've been looking at monster tachos and stuff and been wondering, why don't they sit at '0RPM' when the car is switched off? What determines where they sit and why don't factory tachos ever behave like that? Can you adjust/influence whether they do that when the car's off? I don't know much about electronics so please respond in layman's terms lol, I'm quite curious

Pull needle off.
Put back on in correct spot.
Check against other known good tacho.
Layman enough?

Straight from the Autometer instructions of my monster fitted a few weeks ago:
Note: this tachometer has an air core meter. with power off, it is normal for the pointer to leave zero. when 12v is applied the pointer willmove to the correct position.
guess you could do some googling on the whole ''air core meter'' thing. i choose to stick with the smoke and mirrors theory

My 5" Mallory tacho sits on 0RPM when the engine is off.
