Well I've read Oldjohnnos thread like a bible since joining but I'm still no closer to sorting my LJ's stock old red 202 lack of power. I've managed to squeeze $3000 bucks from the missus to up the power on my sunday cruiser but don't know which way to go.
Basic rundown:
Engine : Red 202
Exhaust : stock
Trans : Auto
Diff : 3.08
Wheels : 13" 205's
Can someone suggest the best bang for buck or path I should head down, parts to buy (shopping list), specs I should aim for ie : carb type, cam specs, head, ignition etc. I live in Perth and any recommended engine builders would be great too (and no, not Mal Campbell please)
Thanks

From oldjohnnos website

The Old School Special (aka The Hoon) - A strong performing, sweet sounding nostalgia trip
Red 179, 173 or 186 block
3" crank, blue/black rods
10.5:1 compression
9 port Bathurst/YT style head, 1.7"/1.48" valves, maybe with a little additional port work
235 to 240deg @ 0.050" 0.45" lift solid lifter cam
Adjustable rockers
Triple 1.75" SUs or Strombergs CDs
HEI ignition
1.5" x 30" primary pipe extractors with 2-3/4" collector
A uteload of banjo diff centres and axles

Cant see why you couldnt do it with a 202 and 3.25" crank shouldent make to much difference...

Cheers.

There's a million different ways to skin a cat, but my favourite builds on a ghetto budget are based on the injected VK engine. For a few hundred dollars (or less) you get a good head, crank, rods and dissie all in one handy take-away pack. Do whatever it takes to get 10:1 CR and whack something like a Wade 1147 in it (I don't normally like hyd cams but this way you get to save money by keeping the existing rockers). Cut 'n shut 'n port a Varajet manifold to take a 500 Holley. Buy some $200 ebay pipes and a converter out of a Gemini. Any money left over spend on pocket porting the head or coke 'n hookers. It'll cost SFA but make enough power to be fun.

Or go the way we have with our Sports Sedan engine, and put a Ford head on it!!!

We call it a "Folden". :D

Lucky the good ones we use were cast by Honda.
We normally start the conversation with "Honda head" before mentioning the F,F,F,F word!!!!

A few pics. Unfortunately I just don't have much time to spend on this and it's not unusual for several months to pass with no progress at all taking place. It really doesn't need much more to finish off - just need to shape the front plate and assemble it. I have nearly all the gear on hand; about the only major bits I still need are the cams and intake manifold. But other jobs are higher priority..

Marcus, Was actually thinking about going and having a better look at yourse. Saw it once ages ago.

Its a lot more progressed than mine is, plus mines a dohc type one, so not sure how many ideas we could steel off each other.

I work with Danni Rowe, you know him i think???

Spoken to you briefly a few times around the pits.

Cheers.

I'm not pointing this at anyone (>>> BOMBER <<<) but I'd rather have a stock HOLDEN V8 in my car than a RED 6 with a F@RD head!!!!! :freak:
