ok guys i have never painted or repaired panel work on a car before but i am wanting to give it a go.. not major repairs just minor.. Anyways i recently brought another bonnet for my torana so i can cut a hole in it and have the filter through the bonnet... it is currently painted , paint is shit . It has a few surface rust spots nothing major. What i wont to do with it is rub it back , prime and paint matt black for time being ... Can anyone please give me some advise on the rubbing back process, the steps to follow that and the primer process and which primer to use cheers Ben BIG thanks in advance

i would paint strip it back to metal. 180 the bonnet, repair, a coat of etch primer, then 2k primer, rub back and paint

That about covers it, perhaps a bit of deox (rus converter) over the rusty spots if there bad.

Cheers.

yeah agree with bomber about the rust but by the way you said it was it should just sand out. dry rub it. if you can get a hold of a dynabrade it will save a shit load of time. you can buy one fairly cheap.

Best thing you will ever buy, called a "dynabrade" in the western states or a "random" or "orbital" in the eastern sates from what i can gather.....

Cheers.

cant help ya with that i have never used anything like that. but you are only scratching up the metal so it should be fine. just a tip dont stay in one place to long as it will heat up the metal and the sealer behind the bonnet. if te sealer heats up it will suck the metal down and you might have to cut the sealer

hifill is 2pac spray putty primer, blocking out is when you rub back the hifill, and guide coat is when you spray a really light coat of black over the primer so you know where you have rubbed out and have made sure all the scratches are out. after you guide coat you rub back (block out) but only until there is no black seen dont go any further.

You just want to matt black the bonnet for the meantine, just rub it back with some scotchbrite and water mixed with laundry detergent, rinse and dry then hit it with a can of acryllic matt black.

you could do it that way but theres rust coming through and i know you said theres only a few little spot but thats just what you can see under the paint there will be more rust forming so it would be a good idea to take back to metal. if you want a flat black look i would do what i have said then just buy some 2k black base coat and dont use clear. if your just going to scuff up with scotch and spray can it then once you want to get it painted properly its goning to make the job harder you might aswell do it right once the first time

A coupe of coats of acrylic will not make it any harder to repair the bonnet later.

If you dont have the time or money ATM then just give it a couple of coats as above.

P.S. Using a flat block where you can will help stop your fingers rubbing channels in the bonnet which will show up, anything you see on the bonnet once rubbed will show up in the top coat, woud be a good experience for you.

IMO forget 2K, 2 Pak Hill fil etc and learn the basics first, this stuff is poisioness and expensive to play around with.
Watch a few on line videos, hire or buy a DVD or a book or two.
Sit in the free class on Saturday at http://www.vgautopai...u/begginers.htm and get an idea before you waist money or your heath suffers.

try sand as much of it out as posibble. then wipe rust converter over it. its worse than i thaught it would be. once converted lightly scuff over with 180 and put some polly filler over it.

polly fill as polyster bog. most of the time you see a little bit of rust coming through there will be alot more under te paint thats why i sugested to paint strip the whole bonnet.
