Nice one. In my opinion that is how GMH should have continued with the 4 doors sports package, rather than go to Monaro GTS 4 door. Hell they went back SS less than 10 years later in VH and it's still here! Only the SS Hatchback and the VSIII onwards SS utes are orphans!

Nice Lettuce Alone SS.
Swarbs would it be ok if I use these pictures here.
https://cache.gmh-to...lone/?start=all
at the SS Owners and enthusiasts photo bucket account.
If you have any larger versions of these pictures that would be even better but any SS pictures are always appreciated.
I will credit the pictures to yourself if that is ok with you.
I can be contacted directly at [email protected] if anyone would like to talk to me about HQ SS's.
Cheers Paul.

Knock yourself out Paul
Will send through the photo's to you -- i have scritched the plates anyway so i suppose the owner wont mind (whoever he is) and no need to credit me to them as its only a couple of pics of a nice HQ
Funny how years ago a HQ was a HQ and the roads were full of them and now even a not so neat one will turn your head
But done right they were always as tough as ...k.

The red/orange colour for HQ SS was Infra Red. Only other colour was Ultra Violet (like purple i think).

Thanks Swarbs.
The pictures are very much appreciated.
I have added them here.
https://cache.gmh-to...lone/?start=all
If anyone knows the owner of this SS or any others feel free to pass my email address on to them.

Mr5000.
I would be very interested in talking to your dads panel beater about his SS.
The next time you see him can you pass on my email address to him please.

There are 3 SS colours and as stated above they are
15413 Infra Red (Bluey)
15466 Lettuce Alone
15338 Ultra Violet (Smokey)

There are now over 1200 SS related pictures here
https://cache.gmh-to...S1972/allalbums
If anyone wants to have a look at them.

Knoath at least they are V8 Belmont,s not just a lowly 6cyl Belmont. LoL
Cheers Paul.

Hey Paul, I was wondering if GMH decided to keep the Holden "sports" 4 door as an SS rather than a GTS, if in 1974 when the "sports option" was released on utes and vans (Sandman), that like in VSIII onwards they would have called them SS ute and SS van?? There are subtle package differences but not that many. It'd have been a bit hard on the ute since they were mostly Kingswoods but the van would have certainly been nice as an SS.

Thanks for replying Mr5000.
I have a phone number for Lou at the Monaro factory but as yet I have not spoken to him.

Yel327.
I have often wondered what the reason was behind the change from SS 4dr to GTS 4dr was.
But going by all the flack they received in the road test reports from the media at the time about how basic the SS's were
I suspect this may have been part of the reason for the upgrade from Belmont base to Kingswood base.
I have often thought that the SS name was used instead of the GTS 4dr just in case the public reaction to the vehicle had been negative.
Then it could have just been quietly dropped and forgotten with out damaging the GTS coupe name at the time.
But the vans and utes being called Sandmans and not GTS ute or GTS van has been something I have always wondered about as well.
I suspect that it was to keep the GTS label as being a more elite name not just found on any old thing.
Somewhere I have pictures of a HQ ute that has been painted up as a SS but I have yet to see a van with the same treatment.
Cheers Paul.

You are of course correct, i was refereing to HQ's in orange. Never quite see infra red or mandarin as orange, no matter how many times people show me the colour.

I believe there were only 1500 SS's made and are now becoming very collectible :spoton:

Charlie McCarron had 2 of which I think both have been sold.

Regards .... Barry
