Over the years , the paint fades / flakes off and the markings show thru.

The left hand wheelhouse of LC XU-1 (as does the LJ XU-1) has a different part number to the other models. Perhaps it is something to do with that. The only difference that I can think of may be something to do with the battery carrier.
I have recently stripped the engine bay of my car and the only thing that I found appears below. It is on the firewall and is body colour. It looks like a 4 but I think it is an A.
Cheers

When my head was reconditioned, when they chemicaly cleaned the head,
when i got it back from the machine shop,on the back of the head,
It had the letters xu1,I took photo's of it,I don't know,
What paint they used in those days on the marking's,
chemical clean didn't remove it.
Cheers.

I remember seeing the same xu1 marking in roughly the same spot when i stripped the engine bay of my old xu1. This was some time ago and i don't have any pictures of it. It was a mid 72 Adelaide xu1, i don't have the compliance plate date, but i do have the vin and the build date was 22/06/72. I no longer have it as it was stolen around 15 years ago. I remember on it that it looked like it had been written in black texta, and i found it while using paint stripper on the engine bay.
I would think they wrote this on before the shell had any id plates on it, and maybe before the battery tray was added.
regards
Rob

Could the XU1 on the inner guard, Is to tell the Guy who did the Fitting of the I.D Plates that it was a XU-1.
as the Brisbane Plant fitted I.D Plates before painting the Body i think.
Might be that

I rubbed all the paint off my body tag on my xu1 and the last cote was the red lead and at the time slightly lifted the tag to have alook under it and it was bare metal so that would tell you that it was on from day dot.So maybe with that tag on would indicate it was to be an xu1 in the line.Hi Fly

I have also seen it on the firewall nside the passenger cell above the transmission tunnel on another car so there seems to be no pattern
