I have a question about how the shifter and gear selector lever at the transmission operate on a trimatic V8. I hope my drwaing helps you understand what I am asking.

I have been told that the gear selector lever on the tramsmission is in the park position when it is fully pushed forward (to wards the front of the car). On the shifter the shifter arm is fully to the rear (even though the the shifter is fully forward) when in park. My question is: if the gear selector lever is fully forward and the shifter arm is fully to the rear how are the gears selected.

When you look at my drawing this does not make sence as the rod can not move to select gears. Logic says that the selecter lever at the transmission should be fully to the rear (in Park) which will then allow the rod to move forward and select the appropriate gear.

Is there an issue which my transmission set up.

I have not tried to connect the shifter and selector via the rod as I am not sure what damage I may cause.

yes mate park is all the way forward. put the shifter in park. then under the car put the box in park and adjust the shifter rod to suit.

The lever on the gearbox points down on the column shift setup.
The lever on the gearbox points up on a floor shift setup.

Therefore the following statement can not be true for both.

I have been told that the gear selector lever on the transmission is in the park position when it is fully pushed forward.

I suspect that when the gearbox lever is in the floor shift position all the way back is the park position.

To confirm the park gearbox lever position, move the lever all the way back then try and turn the tail shaft. Then move the lever all the way forward and try and turn the tail shaft.

The manual shows two part numbers for the gearbox lever. One for the column shift and one for console shift.

I defiantly have the lever configuration for a floor shifter set up. I agree that the lever external control (located at the transmission) for floor shift must be fully to the rear to be in park. This means that for column shift the lever must be fully forward to be in the park position. My assumption is based on that the lever external control points up on floor shift and down on column shift.

I think that this is where the confusion is with what I was told.

I will now connect the shifter rod and lever external control with the lever external control fully to the rear. I will also test with tyring to rotate the tail shaft with the above connection.

Thanks for the responses.

That is definitely correct, the person who told you the wrong thing must have been a little confused
