Steve I'de like to offer advice but not knowing your situation I feel I would be leading your astray, what I can do is offer encouragement to stick with it, listen to the others and take heed of their advice.

Buying another 2nd hand car is not always the answer, think about it, the money you spend buying it could be put towards fixing the UC, and you could end up with the same problem you have now if and when it breaks down, and it will break down just when is the question.

As mentioned is there a Holden club, or car club in general around you, if its anything like the clubs I've been in the members will be happy to help you with work on your car or advice on how to fix it properly.

You say your friends, do they have any mechanical knowledge, surely they can help you on the weekends with your gearbox and diff or any other problems you need to fix.

Once again, as mentioned before, the Torana is cheap ( most of the time) and easy to repair yourself unlike the commodore, depending on the model you are looking at, you have to be a rocket scientist to get anywhere near fixing/ tunning it, anyway think of the satisfaction you will get when you finally fix those niggling problems and have the knowledge to fix/repair/tune your UC once it running right.

Like I said all I can offer at this time is encouragement to stick with it, and don't worry about your mates being quicker than you getting from point A to point B at least you have a better chance at keeping your license than your friends :).

You only need to do the 2 bushes on the diff before you put it in, you can do the others anytime. Get a set of spare rear control arms and when you have money leave them with Fulcrum or someone. Then you can just swap them over in a few hours.

That's how I always do it.

No, the clutch will be in the way. Use red loctite and a torque wrench

If you don't have or can get access to a compressor and spray gun then go the rattle can route, I paid about $15- $16 for a large can, should do both springs depending on how thick you spray it.

Clean/degrease springs, sand with a course sandpaper, another clean ( water will do) dry, you can hang the spring to spray it but will have a raised area around the wire etc that you hang it with or stand it on a clean surface, spray and when it's dry turn and do the area that got missed.

That's how I have been doing all the bits and pieces so far.

You need a press for the bearings, but if you take the axles and bearings to a workshop they won't charge much. Not sure how much bearings are, I have to get some myself soon.

Do you want to paint it black or use a color, I am just going to get a can of chassis blackpaint and spray it with that along with the K-frame.

Hi Steve,
Like your car and it looks tough but seriously get rid of them wheels that don't fit (stockies would look better) and lower the rear.
You've got a nice UC, stick with it :)

Wheels fit fine, coils just need to be half the height and twice the rate.

Fitted the 3.08 ratio diff and the disc setup yesterday. Also smashed the cog on the dizzy so replaced that. I've also decided to find already reliable daily andante trade the torana on something. Been offered 3000 as a trade in on manual Subaru liberty wagon. Or as a straight swap on a Toyota Cressida. But I Am going to try and get finance so I can keep the uc

Also did the disc brake diff conversion and some rear bushes. killed the thermo fans so replaced them with a mechanical which also meant getting a new water pump. new front tyres, inlet /exhaust manifold gasket.

Ok so the rego is cashed in and i haven't had any ibterest in a sale so now i need to decide what to do with it. i will be binning the 202 and getting a new motor but I'm unsure which way to go.

308

Rb30/rb25

Commodore v6

So what are peoples opinions what should i do. i would like tp start collecting parts soon and have the car on the road again in 18 months. when its done it will be my daily again and will hopefully be more reliable than before.

A sorted 202 is plenty reliable enough. Electronic ignition, sorted carb, good condition cooling system, regular oil changes and that 6 banger will go forever. Screwing around with rb30, V8 conversions on the cheap will not give you what you want....
