Thats a bugger. Don't give up on it again though. Just fix it and keep driving it.

Just thought I'd throw up an update.

I've lowered the rear by about 40mm so the car is sitting a lot nicer now.

I've also been collecting parts for my new motor. So far I have:
Fully reco 12 port head
Stage 3 cam
Lifters to match
Timing gear
Harmonic balancer
Gasket kit
Thermostat housing
Flywheel

Still to come is:
Roller rockers
Rocker cover
Pushrods
Better valve springs
Maybe a new dizzy and mad 6al but not sure of the cost and if its worth it
Inlet manifold
Exhaust manifold
Have to pick a carby 350 or 500 Holley or keep the 34 adm weber

Also will be doing the rear bushes soon.

38 DGAS/DGMS Weber off a V6 Capri is a good option. I fitted one to my Lc (in place of 34 ADM) and the difference was just what I was looking for. They are synchronous so both barrels open at the same time rather than progressive as with the 34 ADM. Can be a bit tricky to get your hands on in Aus, but you could keep your existing inlet manifold which would balance out the cost a little. 38 is 380 cfm apporx so a nice little upgrade of about 100 cfm over your existing 34.

Well change of plans. I went out and bought a 253 and trimatic out of an hq. Came with the radiator and hoses and a few other bits.

So now I need to know if I'm missing anything.

I have already fitted v8 springs
I have the engine mounts, sump, radiator, hoses, alternator bracket.

Can I use my 6cyl tailshaft?

Also have to re wire the auto bits.

Can I change the uc shifter to a drivers side linkage?

Hi Steve
I havn't posted on your thread before but have been following it since it started
Gotta say i admire you for sticking with it - full kudo's there and you should by now know the car inside out

The thread has been full of highs and lows like war and piece on steroids
Shit there has been times when i felt like driving over there and give you a man hug i felt that bloody depressed for you

What is your dream Steve? -- what do you REALY want?

What makes you stand on the side of the road as something drives past and go "shit yeah!"
Once you have that in your head drop everything else and drive toward that one goal

If that goal is a UC Torana with a 253 in it then so be it
But if it is not
Unload the lot and get on the path to what you want

Cheers
Rodomo it has a blue 202 with a 9port head

Awards my dream car has always been a torana whether it be a uc or Lh/lx. My dream would be to respray it in flamenco red or similar with a decent motor and box.

I love the fact the it surprises a lot of people especially when I take it off road haha.

I have also replaced the passengers rear door.

The next thing to do is get the baby seat ready haha

So 202 with Tri? Aussie? Either of these and your tailshaft should fit. The uni's are smaller on a 6 t/shaft though and they won't last as long.

so the 202 kind of died on the way back from Melbourne last weekend.

had a rocker cover full of creamy white oil and a knocking. pulled it down and the head gasket wasn't blown. went to rebuild it and the balancer wouldn't come off as the threads were stripped in it, so I got frustrated and ripped it to bits haha.

so now im getting the 253 together to drop in.

so far ive just cleaned up the block and pistons a bit and a mate has taken the heads to clean them up and replace the oil? seals.

ordered the new cam for it today, a crane basic with rpm range 1500-4000

have also dropped a few bits off at the engine builders for a sandblast and clean up.

can anyone recommend a set of extractors for around $500?

Hi Steve,

I like what you've done with that washer bottle and overflow. Very neat.

Are you going to splash some paint over that engine bay?  Could come up a treat with a nice V8 sitting in there.

Your rocker covers look very neat too.  Keep at it!

cheers and oh well cant please everyone, I want to spray the engine bay but need some holes welded up and the battery tray repaired first.

I just bought another daily that I need to get ready for rego so this will take a while to get done.

so far ive got my cam and lifters

leads

plugs

points

oil filter

exhaust bolt kit

thermostat and housing

cleaned up a water pump and timing case

cleaned up the pushrods

cleaned and painted the rocker covers and dust cover for the box

I have my heads at the engine builders awaiting a quote to reco them and fit better valve springs

the bottom end is slowly coming apart and will all be rebuilt eventually (theres a kit on ebay with crank, rods, pistons, bearings and rings + gaskets for like $1200 so ill get that in a few months when I can afford it) by the way its no procomp stuff haha.

will try and get more pics soon but I am having trouble with photobucket, it wont let me copy pics to the forum and cant work out why.

You are getting there, once you have the goodies, then the preparation begins.

I want to spray the engine bay but need some holes welded up and the battery tray repaired first.

Just a note on the head gaskets, most of the retailers will just give you a set marked '253/308" ,the 253 has a slightly smaller bore and if the

head gaskets are one size fits all you will lose a bit of compression and it will be worse with a bit of cam if you use a 308 gasket,.

I don't know if ACL still make them but they are AX130GTR 'race'.

I know not many people go for the 253 but they are honest,,,had one in the LH with a trimatic for near on 15 years driving the family and myself at times around..tried to kill it nearly every day and failed.

Good family fun :)

another great bit of information UC,

which reminds me of the 253 blue block that can be bored out to a 308, if I remember correctly.

do 308's have a different stroked crank to a 253?

thanks for that I will sus it out when the time comes.

took my inlet manifold to the engine builders today and they said its the best condition 4 barrel manifold they have seen in a long time.

heads were priced up and will cost me $700 to get done. already have larger inlet valves but need new larger exhaust valves and all the guides need to be done.

also dropped the sump and some nut and bolts off t get cleaned up.

really glad I pulled the motor down now as the cam had 2 wiped lobes and the big end bearings are rooted.

No,no,no :) don't put bigger valves in it,if anything they need 'choking" off a bit when you compare the valve throat on the V8 to that on a 6 ,which has a larger cylinder to throat area than that of the 8,it kills them,i am no expert but have had quite a few yarns with a bloke up here that has built a few engines over the last 20-30 years and it is very interesting what sort of "crap" gets thrown around at times,

Yes GP according to book 253/308 have same stroke of 3.062 but bore is bigger on 308 and the crank on the 308 is "heavier" in counter balance terms and has 308 cast in them, not sure if the later ones changed the "code" on crank though?
