Hey Steve, the 253 doesn't need bigger valves. In fact I believe that in most cases it should be more responsive with the smaller standard valves, as the baby V8 draws greater air speed through them.

And someone may like to verify this, but I believe you may run into problems if you go larger valves in a 253, where the top of the bores need to be notched to clear the valves. And doing this can also be detrimental to performance. Larger valves are okay on a 308 because they can clear the larger diameter bore.

By the way, I'm glad to hear you're keeping the car again.

thanks might get my other heads looked over and see if standard valves in them will be ok.

have a pic below of engine fans, which one is best?

also painted up a few more bits

and I need to figure out the wiring at the plug in the bay as my wiring has been played with a lot in the past and I have never had working oil pressure of temp gauges. I have the max elerys manual but it doesn't have uc in it and is hard to follow. theres4 main plugs and I know what two do and some wires on the others also correct me if im wrong.

-pink ?

-orange?

-brown ?

-green ?

-blue ?

-yellow  =coil

-pink   ?

-red   ?

-purple  ?

-brown  ?

-yellow      =heater

-red

-white

-light green

-dark green      =wiper motor

-black

-yellow

I grouped them as the separate plugs cheers

I'm only guessing so don't take my word for it but the top plug could be turn signals/hazards. The next one down could be horn? Or could also be wiper washer pump? I don't have a manual or wiring diagram with me here so just some ideas. If you can't verify it with a manual, you might be able to untape the bundles if wire running out of these and follow them to find out where they run to.

Were the senders for oil pressure and water temp connected to any wires before you pulled the 202 out?

no it was all random relays and stuff for electronic dizzy and the thermo fans the plugs arnt horn or turn signals or lights I left those out as there all fine, I know there for sensors and also go to the starter. there are some that go to a relay but I don't have any idea what it does(sits near the heater fan but isn't connected to the heater wiring).

Top plug is -

Red - Main 12v+ (batt) from starter

Purple - Starter wire from ign

Yellow - Coil

Blue - oil pressure

Green - temp sender

Pink - 12v ign for the varajet idle solenoid IIRC?

Brown - Alternator light

2nd plug I'm having one of those increasingly more common 'senior moments' and cant quite remember - I'll have a look in the morning if no one else knows...

All i can say about the 253 and cam/big valves is from having had a sunbird that the Mrs drove around in,yella tera heads and only a mediocre cam

and it was dead, and the neighbor also had a very similar set up in his one toner, put it this way...i drove both cars and my shity bog stock 253 with a

stromy would out pull both..a half decent 202 with stock heads and bit of a cam and triple SU's probably would have left us bot for dead. :)

thanks spoke to the engine builder today and he said hey only need the slightly bigger valves and that they should be fine, but now I face the choice of either going with these heads and the 4 barrel manifold and rochy or my other heads with the 2 barrel manifold and carb.

Actually,i been sort of thinkin,if you want those head gaskets, you can have them for the cost of freight,i don't need them,as long as you use them.

if you want em, PM me post code of  where you would like them to go,if not no probs.  :)

Nothing wrong with the 253. Mine goes great in the light Torry with a four barrel manifold and manual.

Wouldn't remove the lips without some serious additional reinforcing (could be easily done from the inside on the lower - don't know how you would do it on the upper) These lips add significant strength. I've found that straightening them up, grinding back the inconsistencies & filling them with a sandable sealer can bring them up quite nicely. Also that lower lip is handy for running wires....

Good luck
