lol i think you can buy just the tips anyway. i wouldn't buy a new spray gun just for the tip size.

Is a 1.4mm tip a bit small for acrylic lacquer?

yes 1.4mm is a bit small for acrylic,
you can use a 1.4mm but it will take longer and can lead to other problems,

I'd recommend at least a 1.8mm tip, and for some heavy metalics I go even bigger.............

Definately 1.8 or bigger, otherwise it will be dry as. It will be all overspray.

how caould it be all overspry and dry? don't you have air pressure? 1.4 tip applys nice, thin and wet well when i'm spraying anyway. all the spraypainters at my work suggest 1.4 for all types of top coats. 1.8 is used for primers especially 2k hifill, puts it on nice and thick.

Alright, alright, alright already.

FYI at TAFE we were taught with a 3mm gun on acrylic, I could not believe it myself but the results spoke for themselves.

I am a firm believer in bigger is better.

Acrylic Lacquer = 1.8mm or 2.0mm Tip

2K Basecoat = 1.2mm,1.3mm,1.4mm,1.5mm tip

2K Solid & Clear = 1.3mm, 1.4mm, 1.5mm tip

Acrylic Primer = 2.0mm tip

2K Primer = 1.8mm or 2.0mm tip

Plenty of people will tell you what they have used or gotten away with in the past, the above are typical recommendations or guidelines that will get you going in the right direction.

Using a smaller tip like a 1.4mm with Acrylic Lacquer will require you to thin down your paint a hell of a lot to get it to flow out of the gun nicely, when you over thin it will not only take you longer to get any decent coverage with a low solid style paint like Acrylic you can also run into bigger problems like solvent boil and the thinners biting into the substrate and making it fry up leaving you with a big mess to have to sand out and start all over again. Then there's also the very good chance if you are a beginner that you won't be able to acheive a decent finish.

A 3.0mm tip is like a bloody Garden hose.....and is really only useful for painting Spray Polyester, using a monster tip like a 3.0mm will run a beginner into plenty of problems too.

Spray Guns are getting so cheap to buy these days, get yourself a 2.0mm tip gun if you want to have the least hassles/risk and concentrate on getting a good finish. And you might get lucky with buying a cheap gun and get one that will flow paint but if you spend some money on a good quality gun you will get better results.

1.8-2mm works best for me. I've tried smaller but not bigger than 2.2mm. Definitely wouldn't go smaller.

Pete sizes have been what I have always used, with Acrylic you don't get good coverage with a small tip, yes you can lower the pressure to wet it up a bit but you would have to put a heap more on for coverage, and Yldlj I meant it looks like overspray because with a small tip its going to be coming out dry and dusty unless you lower the pressure and then your back to poor coverage again.

going on recent advice from my pain supplier...use a 1.8 pot gun for acrylic as the gravity guns atomise the paint.

Thought he was nuts, I found that the gravity gun kept giving me a dry look, tried the pot gun and it was a totally different look...much much wetter.
