Thanks Clay!
Ol' mate came around an lent a hand today, his name is Piccaso, he does the painting.
I farted around for an hour or so and worked out I can do this bit.
Then we put the diff housing in.
Then pulled the front cross member out.
Then the car nearly fell off the hoist
So I tied it down with ratshit straps!

So Piccaso couldn't make it today so his Russian cousin Ivor Bigun stepped in. Ivor is a big man and gets a bit carried away, also he doesn't speak (or hear?) much English.
I asked him if he would clean up the crossmember ready for paint? He grunted and went on his merry way.
In the meantime I was under the car with the heat gun, scraper and a wire brush removing deadener.
This is the result? A near bare metal crossmember? I dunno whether to paint it? Have it chromed? Or just spray clear over it? :wtf:

Next I asked him to help cos I wanted to remove the nuts and washers for the steering column in the engine bay so they don't get sprayed. The plan was to take the top one out and replace it with a spare bolt then remove the others to maintain a bit of originality and not break the original seal.
Gung Ho Ivor removed them all before I had time to blink and next minute I hear the steering column smash to the floor shattering into a million pieces then a train ran over it!

Does this need replacing or can it do another few laps?
