You don't muck around! Looking good. What brand of flares did you use? They look sweet.

I don't know what the regulations are in Tazzy Coxy, but my certifier wouldn't pass that in Qld.

Even welding mounts onto a tank requires engineering.
It's not as simple as just gluing them where they fit & hoping it all works out.

Different materials react differntly in regards to stress points. While fully welding the mounts to the tank may seem stronger, it's not the case with alluminium.

Brown Davis stitch weld a compensation plate to the side of their tanks, then the mounting brackets are welded to that. If you have a look at Litre8's tank, you will see what i mean. There are also a few more members with BD tanks in their cars. Perhaps someone will post a pic.

In the first pic: The rearward mounting plate is welded vertically, with no weld top/bottom. The problem is.... those 2 welds are sharing the full weight of the tank [with a full fuel load] & being subjected to 'shearing' forces, every time you hit a bump.
The weakest point of the welds is the start/stop. When these welds fail, that's where the cracks will start.

Alloy is more ductile than steel. When a crack starts, it may fail without notice.

I suggest you take the tank back to the welder, & ask him/her to continue those welds around the corners about 25mm. Also.... put another 25mm stitch in the centre along the bottom & top edges. Pay particular attention to the start/stops. 'Craters' in this area is not acceptable.
As the old adage goes... a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link, welding is the same.

I hope this makes sence, i've tried to not get too technical.

Disclaimer: I am not a certified engineer, just a busted arse boilermaker with a little experience.

Statler, you are dead right. I thought the same thing when I saw those pix. And I'm a dopey coded welder.

The main reason the Brown Davis drop tanks have reinforcing plates at the mounts is because they are made from 1 mm sheet.

I would guess based on the lack of distortion along the welds that this tank is made from 3-5 mm sheet and therefore would not require the reinforcing plates.

Thanks for this info guys.. So you suggest that it wont need the extra plates.. although I should still get the welds continued a bit more??
Thanks heaps for that info too Statler.. makes heaps of sense :)

Probably a bit late to fit compensating plates, but stitch welding a gusset between the bolt holes wont hurt.

Yes... continue the welds as i described.

Starting to play around with the interior now.. I've made up a centre console mounting bracket, and now i'm looking at mounting the seats in.. I'm after some brackets similar to these..

These are the new seats (replacing that old clapped out bench seat!!)

Woo hoo.. the new shoes turned up!! Very happy with them :) 265's on the rear.. and 245's on the front. The rear will clear without needing any cutting at this stage.. the front however needs a few minor mods!!

10 inch hotties cost a fortune, don't they? Where'd you get 'em?

Nice score...... I like them, the tyres seem to sit very nice on those wheels IMO. I like the bulge on the sidewalls, looks tough :) However I was hoping you'd found a magical fairytale place that sells 10inch hotwires at a reasonable price......... (sigh)....... the hunt continues........

I may have to go the same way you have.

Woo hoo.. got the interior mostly together :) Got the new seats on some runners, re-cond the centre console, and put the new carpet in. Not much left for rego now really..

1: Roof lining (plus putting vinyl around the tops of the doors etc)
2: Install Front and rear windows.. plus a new parcel shelf
3: Couple of small altercations to the front gaurds (to accomodate the 245 tires)
4: New door and boot rubbers
5: Twin exhaust system (will be getting carline mufflers to do this one!!)
6: Finish installing/mounting the drop tank..
:)

Incase theres a slight gap between the window seal and the vinyl.. i painted the edge black.

Although it isnt glued on yet.. should look something similar to this..
