Is the 72 xu1 tappet cover decal different to the 73?Been told that the 72s had a orange xu1 lettering and the 73s had red,any feed back would be greatly appreciated.
cheers Dane
hi dane,
i,m pritty sure they are the same,i,ll check mine its a new old stock when fitted many years ago,i think the red are the botchy repro,s and there are thousands of them around,
aldo would be the best man for the job as he has untouched cars.

Here's what's on Brad Merrick's site regarding the decals I don't know if he's right or wrong though:
"1972 LJ XU-1 Rocker cover decal. There is a different decal for 1973 with XU-1 in RED. It had different dimensions."

Hi,
They are the same, the one with the red letters is rare spares decal.
Cheers.

These are 2 photos taken in 1972 of PWH-161 which is a Brisbane built 1/72 LJ XU-1. The reason for the different dimensions in stickers from the 1972 sticker compared to a 1973 sticker is that the 1973 cars ran a different rocker cover to the 1970-71-72 XU-1,s. In reguards to the 1973 sticker (XU-1) being red compared to the 1972 sticker being orange, Im unsure, though usually anything associated with red indicates it being a rare spares reproduction. In my opinion the red/orange (XU-1) on the stickers looks very similar to the paint used on the engines..........

The top one was rare spares first effort (Pretty Sad) The bottom one is there latest effort, at least they got the 3300 right this time though the orange used in the (XU-1) is to light for my liking.............

82911JH221723 COMPLETED 25-1-1972 (PWH-161)
PWH-161 (82911JH221723) was completed on Tuesday the 25th of January 1972 and was first registered later in January 1972. It was used originally as a press test car in which its first appearance was at Surfers Paradise on Saturday the 5th of February 1972. The same day this photo was taken ^^^^^ 11 days after its completion date. PWH-161 appeared in many newspaper and magazine articles. I dont think you can get a more original shot of an XU-1,s engine bay than this one !!! The 3300 on the sticker looks clear to me.........
Being 100% and 200% sure about things im sure you are now going to bomard us with the PROOF
This should stir the pot a little...............

I find this topic interesting to say the least.
I will also be asking for proof or undisputeable evidence to confirm that 72 XU1s had the red writing.
If you look through car magazines/ books of the day it would suggest that 72s were in fact clear.

When i was at xu1's on the mountain 2002,i spoke to a lot of owners and a lot of them were original owners of their cars,i took 153 photo's.I spoke to one owner of a 73 xu1,and i was asking about his rocker cover sticker,he told me months before that event,he removed his rocker cover took it to a sticker mob,and they made a replica of the original of his rocker cover,he took a few photo's of it on the rocker cover before the removal of the sticker,to put the new one on.I put one on my car,i bought it from rare spares, and it was incorrect,as i found out being at that event in 2002,i found a lot of owners of 72's some of them had their original rocker covers stickers, they were not in bad nick for their age of 30 years.I have had a good look last night at the photo's of the engine bay shots of the rocker cover stickers, and they are the same as 72's and 73's,the 3300 is clear, and the xu-1 is orange,my scanner is not working so i cannot put up for you all to see.
Cheers John.

I spose at the end of the day if you need a 72 or 73 decal and whats right or wrong we are stuck with whats being reproduced at the moment. And that is the clear 3300 with the orange xu1.
There is currently a guy on evil bay selling what looks to be a good reproduction. Apparently he has done a whole heap of research and claims the colour on the XU-1 is sebringe orange. Its been around 20 years since i,ve seen a genuine sticker however i do recall the XU-1 being a reddy/orange. $25.00
