Mass isn't everything; the location of it is important too. At least a Holden V8 is short and stubby. I don't know how much it would weigh but a Holden 6 (or particularly a Ford six, Hemi six, Chevy six etc) puts a fair bit of stress through the structure because of its length. I would say that something that can easily support a Holden 6 would be fine for a Holden V8.

If you're willing to spend a bit, get one with a winding mech on the shaft, awesome luxury :P

the mounting plate that the arms that bolt to the motor on some are very flimsy mine is about half-3/4inch steel plate doesnt even flex the old one at mitsubshi u stick a v6 on it and te sump would hit the bottom leg

Was 3/8 UNC from memory for my 253. Assume they're the same.

Yep, I have the cheapest one available and its stood up fine to all sorts of abuse - the Holden V8 is less of an issue than almost any six. The stand flexes a bit but its never actually bent. The worst so far was a 265 Hemi which we could only attach using three out of four bolts, decided to make an extra temporary support for that one! The one advantage with not having the extra cross bar at the front is that you don't trip over it.

There was a thread on eng stands a while ago
Issues with flexing and bending -- not sure how to fish it out but maybe worth a look as it wasn't pretty and was bought from a well known supplier

How'd Bali go?

I've got a 350 on one stand
And a 308 on another
Both cheapie $99 stands

They hold them up... but hard to move and almost impossible to spin on the shafts

Depends if your storing or building engines on it

I'd recommend Hare & Forbes too
Recently bought a 20Ton press from them
Their list price was cheaper than the rest when the
rest had them on special. Malz were then & still are
$120 odd more expensive for the same item.
