I know this may sound anal to some people asking all these questions but I have loved these cars since I was in my teens and now I'm in the middle of restoring one.I'm just trying to understand the ins and outs of them.
cheers

Yeah I fully accept that and admire you guys for it but for the life of me I will never understand it as its foreign to me, then again I dont have to understand it
Keep up the good work cos sure as hell there will be others asking similar questions.
Cheers

these days when you own a collectable car as i do, some people don,t admire them for what they visually see its all about numbers,i rebuilt my xu1 to close to factory spec as possible, only numbers i was concerned about was vin chassis engine number match, and that was it,people almost use a magnifine glass and go over it ,radiator numbers, brake booster, master cylinder, steering rack, calipers, diff housing wiper motor, bla bla bla.
i am lost for words with it all,its as if your cars not full matching numbers because its got the wrong dipstick, luckly i used all the parts that were on my car 20 odd years ago and the nit pickers with there torches just look and wonder, does he know what he has,i might ask, darn it he,s no fool.
i prefer to look at good body lines, gloss, engines and trim etc,if a car looks good in my eyes i,m happy, couldn,t be bothered with numbers, never liked maths at school,
each to there own, chasing these parts is a good hobby i guess.

It's not the numbers that it's about, it's the attention to detail. The most desirable cars are unrestored and unmodified originals in pristine condition but there aint many of those around so the next best thing is a correctly restored car, and this is where the attention to detail comes in. If you do a full resto then the vehicle should be how it left the factory when new, so that's why guys go to great lenghts to find out where all the little identifying stamps and numbers were on these cars so they can put them back on after a resto. There are lots a cars around that have had nice paint and panel work done but few that have had the attention to detail that sets them apart from the average car. This is my opinion only.

It would be something like 38-2.
Work out how many weeks there are in a year up to a date that the components for your car would have been manufactured (about 2-4 weeks before the build date). Allow for 4 weeks being 28 days and not 4 weeks a month. As far as I know the later Lj's have an E before the numbers.
We've got another thread about this as well.

According to Crabba67 the letter code prefix wasn't introduced until 1973.
