No probs, i forgot to add that i don't like butt welding joins like these either, i prefer to step them. If you haven't got a step down tool, slightly bending the overlap of the original sill is OK but here is where trial fitting of the doors is important, if you bend it down too much naturaly the sill will sit lower or you'll have a gap that'll need excessive weld to join. You're work has been spot on so far, plenty of paitence, measuring, trial fitting etc is the key. You'll get sick of fitting & removing the sill panel a few times, i lost count with the XW i did, but the results are worth while. Good luck with it & i'm looking forward to seeing how you go. Cheers Matt

Sorry that there aren't many photos with this but I accidentally deleted a lot off my camera, bugger.

Decided to go about replacing the sill properly. The rear internal braces all needed new metal and all of the internal cavity has been painted with POR15, should keep the tinworm at bay.

I hung the doors again to ensure my gap was even all the way across.

I had left a small 'lip' from the old sill so I could rest the new section on, also made it possible to screw the new section in and hold it straight as I welded it.

Posted Image

This area isn't crucial to get right (chrome strip goes over it), this is close to finished.
Posted Image

Welded it in fairly slowly but ensured the weld was plenty hot. Welding two panels in a 't' arrangement is a pain in the arse but lots of little 'c's get the best result.

Posted Image

Finished result isnt too bad, hasn't warped at all (thank goodness) and was able to hide most of the welds by grinding it back. A small amount of filler where it has slightly undercut in places will be all thats needed. Just a small section near the dogleg will finish it off.

Since you got POR15 perhaps use this instead of cavity wax??

^^^ Hmmm good idea, I spose I'll use what every is easiest to get a hold of, it's all just waxy greasy stuff diluted with thinners.

Painter came round this evening (other guy I called was full up with restos till next year) came recommended by some other guys I know in the automotive industry, just starting out with his own shop, seen some of his work, looks pretty good...

Said he's quite happy to do the job as long as I do the prep involved. He said either I (or him) could epoxy prime the lot then I'll do any filler repair. He'll spray the jams and the primer filler the rest and I can block it all down at his shop (his shop is in the suburb where the house I bought is). Said he would do cost price on the epoxy if I did it meself. Said he could also hire a booth if I wanted a better job (will probably do this). He was unable to give me a price at the moment, said it was up to me for what I wanted to do myself and he'll charge for his time to spray ($30/hr) and consumables. Seems like a nice guy and if it works out good I've got a few other jobs I'll fling his way.

Showed him all the repairs I had done, seemed happy with the work so far "it looks like you know what you're doing", bluffing my way through this is working out fine...

Will be at least until the end of next month before it gets any paint on her, I've got a few trips overseas coming up.

He generally does small panel repair work so has no day-to-day use for a booth. He use to work at a panel shop that went under about twelve months ago (hence why he started his own place), went to the liquidation auction there, place had a HUGE booth. It's only a two man band and hes just started out on his own so I'm not surprised he doesnt have his own booth.

Excellent work on the whole car mate! No matter how bad things got, you pushed on! I only hope I can do the same. I sometimes look at my Torrie thinking "How the hell am I ever gonna finish this?!" but your are showing everyone that nothing is too hard. Keep up the good work!

John.

Done bugger all on this since I got back in the country, not happy bout that I'm still chugging along.

Stripped the boot and the bonnet (only panel on the car not to have rust/repairs)

Posted Image

Finished up the lower dog leg

Posted Image

Had some more panels follow me home, HT kingswood anyone?

Posted Image

Still haven't fixed this area and the guy I was relying on for the section might fall through, anyone had a go at fixing this from scratch?

Been a bit slack this week, just come back from Europe and have been suffering from jet lag.

Decided to fix the corner of the roof from scratch, was not looking forward to this

Posted Image

Was able to bend a bit up which followed the lines quite well
Posted Image

Made a section of gutter and welded that up
Posted Image

Rather impressed how this turned out. Had to melt out some of the lead so will fill that with reinforced filler.
Posted Image

This is the last job before I spray it with epoxy, fix this bloody 1/4. If I could I would replace the whole thing, but I'm not, least the shrinking disc makes the job a little bit easier.

And because it is near on impossible to get a regular dolly in behind parts of the quarter I fabbed up this. Half the head of a hammer welded onto two bits of 3mm steel (didnt have anything thicker)

Took a page out of the dodgy bros engineering book... plus i got the metal from slicing a section of RHS lengthways.

Reasonable amount of holdens in NZ, not a whole heap of toranas and some decent quality parts can be tough to get a hold of (i.e. doors). Plenty of japanese stuff over here that is cheap as chips to get a hold of, a heap of boyracers play around with the late model stuff but some impressive work is being done with some of the older jappo stuff.

Had a chance to clean up the shed (it needed it) and rehang the panels, some members of our car club came round yesterday so needed to have it presentable

Posted Image

Posted Image

Had a really cold snap today which didnt make working in the shed alot of fun, next shed will definately have a pot belly stove in it. Have been spending most of my time trying to get these 1/4s straight. Not very interesting photo-wise but I thought I'd let you know what I'm up to. Going to order some epoxy this week so should have some stuff painted next week

Thats snow, we dont get frost up on the hill. Its still blowing and snowing out there now. Might get the day of work tomorrow as all the roads are closed. Yea ok so far, making a little bit of progress on the 1/4. Was able to smooth off the lower section with just dollys and the shrinking disc (It has had a fair shunt in the past). Upper section is a bit harder, just trying to smooth it out since it stretched to buggery. If I can get it so I only have 1mm max thickness of filler (i.e. a skim) I'll be happy.

To you lot complaining how cold it is, this is what we had this morning. Had a bit of snow yesterday, then some more fell and it all froze overnight. However the southerly that is blowing at the moment makes it much work. No work for me today...

Well that's what happens when you live that far south... :P

Actually was just talking to a mate and apparently the snow came down to sea level here in some places for the first time in decades

^^ Yep, gets down to sea level at least once every too years. This blast has been an especially frozen one, though Dunedin (and especially the hill I am on) has been spared the worse of the snow (Christchurch seemed to get alot of it) it is bloody cold. Spose to have a minus 3 frost tonight, might go park the car where they grit the road.

The internet informs me that Dubbo is currently 15.7C, practically summer

Mahaha
