Sounds like fun :P

I'd better order me 2 of them then ;)

Dropped the diff out today.

Attached File  IMG_2617.JPG   184.21K   2 downloads

I don't really want to reco it and put it back.... Anyone got a decent 9 inch for sale? If I haven't told the story yet..... back in 1993 I was under my SL/R replacing the diff once again.... you see I had blown about 4 diffs in a month with a tricked up TH350 with stage 2 shift... It used to chirp the wheels with every shift..... was great for entertaining mates, but not so good on the wallet. Anyway, I was under the car changing yet another diff center when my ring spanner slipped off a nut and hit me right in the mouth. Smashed my front tooth to pieces :D  I had it repaired (capped) and promptly sold that SL/R, never to own one again, until now.

So you can see why I have this thing against weak diffs!

So with the diff out, I will clean and paint under the boot and wheel arches, repair the LH rear 1/4, bung in a new diff and the reco front end, and I am DONE underneath. Things will start to happen fast with all that being done.

On a side note.... my shed project is coming along.

Attached File  004a.jpg   360.07K   2 downloads

Got it all excavated out, and next week I will have a retainer wall, slab and the shed delivered, ready to assemble. That will be FUN!

Well my 4 week holiday is coming to a close, so before I lose track of where I am at with the resto thread, I had better do a brain dump.

Firstly, I didn't need it yet, but when I saw it, I had to have it. Reproduction herringbone trim, instead of the golf ball trim. My old SL/R back in the 90's had it, and so too does the Papaya. I hadn't seen this being reproduced until very recently.

Attached File  003.jpg   146.47K   2 downloads

Meanwhile, on the actual car, I am still laying underneath, bathing in dirt, crud and cleaning solution, to get the floor ready for paint. The rear guards (and fronts too but I repaired those previously) had been rolled for wide tyres. I did this myself to a few cars back when they were a dime a dozen, but today I appreciate the original look more than modified, so I "derolled" these to bring them back to original.

Before....

And after... I hope the improvement is visible enough, because to the naked eye it's excellent!

Next and hopefully last for rust repairs, was the passenger side rear quarter. The drivers side is immaculate, whereas the passenger side is rat shit, as you can clearly see....

Attached File  078.jpg   78.62K   1 downloads

Previously I had cut out the rear quarter from that same donor UC I picked up a while back. Unfortunately I didn't cut enough of it out! So I had this to work with...

In the wheel arch end I was missing a bit, that turned out to be bog on the Papaya. So what do I do hmmmm? Well.... this is the kind of thing i love! I looked around at what I had on hand, and found this....

Yes, it is part of a front guard, but looking closely at it, the wheel arch profile and curve was pretty damn close, so I cut a piece out and...

Yep, it all lines up REALLY well. Nothing like fabricating rust repair sections from other parts of a Torana!

Next post, in a few days, will show welding that in and dressing it all down nicely. Can't wait to finish that one!

And what's with all these holes? From one badge?

Two holes from each letter.

I'm pretty sure my boot lid had the letters intact on the right hand side under the spoiler.

I thought the individual letters were LH front apron only? I'm sure my LX back in the day had a TORANA boot lid badge as one piece, but looking at this boot lid, I could be mistaken / delusional....

Brad, what were you masking up? Those holes? :wtf:

I had to paint the edges of those badges black. As you can see from my pic above, I've masked up the face of the badge.

I thought the individual letters were LH front apron only?

The LH had the badges spread widely across the centre of the apron, the LX on the RHS of apron, the A9X had a sticker.

Oooops... neglected this thread now haven't I! :D

Got busy in life with shed builds and a new job. At least I finished the shed! Now I can hide and work, and not be within ear shot of the missus ;)

Shed....

Attached File  untitled.jpg   124.69K   5 downloads

New job is pretty full-on. Plus I am working on the Central Coast now, and commuting up and back to Sydney every day. So there goes Monday to Friday! :(

I have made some progress on the SL/R though.... now where was I, hmmm....

Passenger read quarter repair. Very tricky one, being such a large area to weld, and avoid warping from the heat. I am pleased with how it came up, but still a little concerned with how I will finish it off.

Attached File  019.JPG   114.17K   4 downloads

Then I took to the rear valance ends. Both were a little bubbled, and upon inspection, pretty rotten underneath.

Attached File  013.JPG   181.77K   3 downloads

Cut some sections from a mint valance and welded them in. Got lazy with the pics and didn't snap any of the welds. So stupid, because I was really impressed with these welds too.

Attached File  036.JPG   102.84K   4 downloads

Progressed painting of the underside... coming up super clean and neat. Makes it worthwhile to lay on your back and scrub with petrol all day long, just to prep and clean it.

Attached File  006.JPG   112.72K   3 downloads

Still going on the rear wheel arches. Got them all cleaned up and seam sealed as per factory slap that sealer all over the place. Will post pics when that's finished off, soon I hope! :D

Kinda sux that my motivation is now back, and we are heading into winter! I need to plan these things better!
