Working on some other smaller things too.

Had another box of bits and pieces plated. LOVE how these come out. I spend a lot of time cleaning up all these things, and the quality of the plating really is good after the extra effort that goes into them.

attachicon.gifIMG_20130915_131500.jpg

At the moment I am working on the diff. Stripped it bare and started to clean up the housing...

attachicon.gifIMG_20131005_160620.jpg

So far, so good. But unfortunately there are some simple things I need to fix, like the stripped threads for the bottom 2 long bolts...

attachicon.gifIMG_20131005_160538.jpg

Oh and the stripped threads on the housing studs

attachicon.gifIMG_20131005_160705.jpg

Does anyone know where I can buy new ones of these?

And finally, since I am reconditioning it, I want to replace the axle bearings. How do you get the bearing cups out of the housing?

attachicon.gifIMG_20131007_134411.jpg

Hey Mate , As a fitter by trade. Best thing to do, is run a bead of weld directly on that center of the bearings outer race, causing it to shrink. Then you can just hook it out..Do it all the time at work with crusher gearboxes.. Unless you got Skyes and Pickevant puller set.The correct way if you can be bothered.

Unless someone has done something strange it should just hook out to start with, they are only supposed to be a slip fit

Is there any gap between the outer case and housing tube, if so and you have a slide hammer with the hook attachment maybe you can grind he tip down enough to fit in the gap and slide it out gently.

I'll try the weld trick. If that doesn't do it, hooking it out might be the go. Cheers for the tips guys! Always better to ask first than have a go and stuff something up. Do people replace axle bearings and leave the bearing cup in the housing? Surely that is dodgy?

Made some progress over the weekend. I actually had the house to myself for the whole weekend, and I spent all of it in the garage finishing off my engine bay repairs. My SL/R is NOW at teh stage that I thought it would be when I bought it. All of the repairs I have carried out so far I didn't anticipate having to do, as I bought it sight unseen and none of this was mentioned in teh advert.

Anyway..... Welded in a new battery tray.

BEFORE:

attachicon.gifPS_before.jpg

AFTER:

attachicon.gifSDC12291.jpg

And the same panel on the opposite side.....

BEFORE:

attachicon.gifDS_before.jpg

AFTER:

attachicon.gifSDC12293.jpg

attachicon.gifSDC12298.jpg

Then I clamped and welded the radiator support back on.

attachicon.gifSDC12300.jpg

And spot welded aaaaallll the bits and pieces together.

attachicon.gifSDC12302.jpg

attachicon.gifSDC12309.jpg

The I rubbed it all back with some wet & dry.....

attachicon.gifSDC12327.jpg

And gave it a hit of PPG etch Primer.

attachicon.gifSDC12335.jpg

attachicon.gifSDC12332.jpg

And now I'm ready to leave it for another month... biggrin.gif ... and then remove the subframe nd start stripping the underside and get the whole front end ready for paint. That's for another day......

Did you stamp your number in your self

No mate. All done professionally and above board. The existing panel has been retained and stored away for safe keeping, even though the majority of it is ratsh!t.

Officially it is dodgy, especially if bearing people are reading this ;-)

Have done it in a pinch before though, when bearings are in good condition its not usually a problem...

Bearing cups popped out easily. Didn't realise they were a relatively loose fit like that, so to speak.

Saving my pics and info for a bigger update... sorry guys... :P ... but just quickly, where can I get new studs for my diff housing?, that locate the diff centre to the housing, like so:

Attached File  IMG_20131005_160705.jpg   184.17K   3 downloads

4 of the 6 in my housing were pretty well rooted. Definitely don't want to re-use them. Can you buy new?

Cheers!

You should be able to buy them from a specialised bolt shop

Yea I have tried a few local places, and extensively online. All that has come up are second hand ones of the same. I'd really like new if possible.

The most likely thing might be wheel studs of the same thread and diameter.

To sound like captain obvious, have you tried a diff business? Even a company like McDonald Bros in Melbourne. They build New diffs so they must get them from somewhere. UPC build new diffs as well etc.... I'm sure if a company like these can't help, they can point you in the right direction

Thanks Captain ;) Yea, it was obvious, but I was still searching everywhere but a diff place.

Picked these up today, plus the oil filler plug (mine was rounded badly) for $30.

Yeah why is it we always try to do stuff the hard/long way first until someone

comes along and gives you a simple solution. :banghead:

Well Christmas 2013 is upon us, so it's timely that I update this thread, and tell you all how I have spent soooo many hours on my restoration, with what seems like little progress. It's not quite frustrating yet, because the results of all my hours in the shed or garage are still motivating me. This is why we do it right? For the love of the resto!

I have two avenues of restoration going on right now. One is finishing rebuilding the diff and front end, so I can get the body back on all 4 wheels, and the other is finishing the paint so I can bolt it all back together.

The standard diff was completely stripped, inside and out, and was so impressive, I nearly just clear coated it as it... :D

Attached File  IMG_20131005_160620.jpg   204.26K   1 downloads

I then had to replace the diff centre mounting studs, and helicoil the 2 stripped threads.

Attached File  IMG_20131109_174226.jpg   63.82K   2 downloads

And I gave it a sweet coat of 2K black.

Attached File  IMG_20131109_183052.jpg   156.34K   1 downloads

With all new bearings, brake lines and components, and a reco centre, it is now ready to assemble.

While this was going on, I was prepping and painting the rear doors. I have a set of abolute MINT doors, that have never been resprayed. So stripping them has been a breeze...

Attached File  IMG_20131026_180147.jpg   117.12K   1 downloads

I then etch primed, hi-filled, and blocked.

Attached File  IMG_20131130_130545.jpg   82.36K   1 downloads

They came out dead straight and totally satisfied my anal retentive ways.

I then suited and masked up for some more paint action....

Attached File  IMG_20131221_135139.jpg   45.77K   1 downloads

And hit the backsides with 2K

Attached File  IMG_20131221_145156.jpg   61.9K   1 downloads

Then wrapped them up for myself for Christmas...

Attached File  IMG_20131222_100534.jpg   52.08K   2 downloads

And gave the supa straight and smooth outer faces...

Attached File  IMG_20131222_105451.jpg   58.06K   1 downloads

Some delicious Papaya in 2K.

Attached File  IMG_20131222_154150.jpg   70.48K   2 downloads

Setup and prep for 2K is really time consuming, which is why this resto is going at a snail pace... but damn the results are amazing. LOVE that gloss off the gun.

Time for some downtime over the new year period, then back into it.

Merry Christmas all, and a hugely Happy New Year!

Holden just knew that when they designed and manufactured the UC, it would become THE donor for all good SL/R restos and the like, in years to come. That's why the doors remained the same ;)

Urban myth, complete BS, or true? Hmmm....

Yep, loving spraying the 2K. Maybe I should have hada  career in paint / panel. I love it way more than my day job.

Plenty of progress happening at the moment, as I am between jobs... again... so the resto becomes full time in the meantime ;)

Finished rebuilding the diff. Everything new, reco or reconditioned, including the brake lines. Made those myself... hope they seal properly!

Attached File  12180_10152270697687491_934131333_n.jpg   123.29K   2 downloads

Fitted the diff back into the body. New everything there... shocks, springs, even plated all the bolts and nuts... every single one!

Attached File  1654423_10152270697597491_463135360_n.jpg   82.82K   4 downloads

Next to go back in was the fuel tank. It's had a makeover inside and out. Totally clean, coated and painted. I tried to go for the original look with the silver. Wasn't after anything more than that.

Attached File  1970722_10152277072892491_448135777_n.jpg   72.24K   3 downloads

Then up it goes... back where it belongs...

Attached File  1622185_10152277072837491_1244257037_n.jpg   98.7K   2 downloads

And we get to see a pretty hot looking ass end :)

Attached File  1779304_10152277113557491_864495917_n.jpg   79.15K   4 downloads

Finally got to fit wheels (to the rear only) and drop it back down on the deck. The front end is sitting on a trolley. Once I put the K-frame back together, it's on all 4's!

Attached File  1798473_10152277113477491_188611070_n.jpg   77.29K   2 downloads

With all the weight back on the wheels, all the panels start to go on. Rear doors first, then fronts, then guards and apron. That's how I'm approaching it... anyone got a better way, let me know!

Drivers side...

Attached File  1958090_10152279317172491_396975529_n.jpg   97.34K   2 downloads

Passenger side...

Attached File  1798847_10152279317127491_135908120_n.jpg   83.05K   2 downloads

and.... that's all I got for now. Absolutely more to come.
