The length might be an LH/LX thing. The one I took off was about the same as the one if the photo above (my car is an LX) and the new one I bought from Rares was longer - almost full lenght of the grill. Looking at the picture, it may also stop water from being sucked or dripping into the engine bay as a V8 distributor is very close to the firewall.

Aaaahhh very good point there Devil, the designers must hate it when they see hotted up Torries with the bonnets sitting up at the back to get the air flowing through! :P hahahaha

My sole aim of doing it is to reduce underbonnet temp. Extractors will be coated and all that but just wanting to help every little bit because it gets very hot under there.

Seems like I might have to reconsider my position then. Naturally I havn't done any scientific tests but was choosing to do it because it is a common suggestion for getting rid of hot air. Don't jump on me Devils, I know thats what your on about, ppl just doing something because everyone else does. It seems fairly reasonable to the uninitiated but obviously there are more basic laws of science involved here that change the outcome.

Perhaps I'll put the bonnet back down and see what difference the coated extractors makes to everything.

I have come late here and did not read every post in detail but...

If the bonnet does not seal on the rubber at the fire wall it may be cause for an unroadworthy to be issued by the boys in blue.

Reason is that should there be any spill of fluids in the engine bay thay are likely to smeer across the windscreen and affect visability. This was an issue as far back in the fifties when hot rodders removed bonnets from cars.

I do not know what is FACT now but beware! Every action has an equal but opposite reaction.

Not so sure about ^ Finer, the seal is only as long as the plenum chamber and there is ~30cm gap either side for airflow(in which direction is a good question), or plenty of room to get the windscreen coated.

Liam, you were on the right track in the beginning, just tilt the bonnett and try it out. It does help a bit. I helps release hot air from the engine bay when your sitting in traffic or driving very slow and it helps force cold air in when driving fast. I've done it and tested it, it works.
I did it to an LC, started the engine, warmed it up, turned on the thermo fan, put my hand in front of the gap and surprise surprise... hot air, while the car was standing still.

Other suggestions are take the stone guards off the inner guard (if they are there) so that more air can rise up from under the car (and escape) and you may want to consider cutting a hole in your bonnet and putting an A9X scoop on, they work for cold air intake too (over certian travelling speeds).

As for the strip of rubber these guys are debating about. With your car it wouldn't matter if it was there or not. You might feel a fraction of a degree increase in temperature from the vents but your car is HOT anyway :spoton:
