the deal with them? the look cool, are are good for drag racing. they also look very cool when fitted properly.

the question about being manual. i am sure you can get mannual B&M shifters for Mannual cars....i think your refering to Autos with mannual valve bodies. where the driver has to shift up trough the gears...B&M shifters are good forthis. partically the pro ratchet which is proably the most popular one they make.

They make a few different models, check out there website, or look in the AMERICAN AUTOS advertisment in Street Machine...

Here is the B & M site URL, this will tell you about the different models.

http://www.bmracing.com/

It is possible to get auto boxes manualised, perhaps a chat with an auto gearbox repair shop may help you price this out, I have no idea what it costs.

This should get you started on the right raod so to speak.

really they just make it easier to manually shift gears. the problem is that when replacing/fitting them that the selectors have to be perfect with them as they are cable opperated which needs more attention paid to setting it up. say for instance that the shifter was in neutral and trans inbetween 3 and netral it would get nasty.

they look sweet but are they made to last? alot of the cover and outside bits are plastic.

Hey Guys,

B&M Shifters are an aftermarket ratchet style shifter. THey make a heap of different models/styles to suit a heap of applications.

The reason you would use one is mainly for racing ( or looks i spose), but in ratchet mode you pull the shifter back, then back, then back again to reach 1st gear. Then when you launch and need to shift to second, you can "bang" the shifter forward as hard as you can and it will only ratchet a single gear ( Unline a normal shifter wehre you'd go from 1st through to possibly neutral if you pushed forward on it hard!!) allowing you to get back onto the wheel and in control of the car quickly. Repeat for 3rd gear.. and once again to go to neutral.

You can do the same for backward shifts too ( Shifting down). As LJ CHev has said, the setup is IMPERATIVE, if the shifter doesnt function right and you shift halfway through the gears.. Say goodbye to your box.
Having said that.. Ive had nothing but a Ratchet shift in the Monaro, and never had a problem. I'm using a Good quality cable though ($200 worth) Although mine is burnt from the pipes!!

Hope this answers your Questions!!

I also use the pro ratchet in my torana and the WA pits say it is legal because of the gear indicator on the side of it (although unlit and on passenger side)
Also should not the "pro" series shifter come with a larger diameter racing cable as aposed to the standard ones in the lower spec B&M kits. Reverse lock out lever can prove to be a pain in the arse too.

Piece of piss to install.. Just gotto bolt it securely to the floor which may mean making some spacers to get the shifter to sit 100% flat against the odd shaped tunnel, but nah, pice of cake! Full instructions enclosed.. cant go wrong!

(Hardest bit i found was making the cover fit up nicely!!)

Cheers!

Isn't there some sort of bracketry needed for hooking up to a timatic or something, cable on the wrong side or something like. Might make it a bit more of a fiddle, but yeah, still pretty easy to do.
