I had a bit of a look at the Dirtbag ute this morning & I think it looks quite good in the flesh as it is now.
Brad

I had a quick perv at it before we left the Shell and was really looking forward to checking it out properly (and also having a chat to the MAN himself) once we got to Lance's place.

Oh well,maybe next time.

Thanks Brad. I hope you didn't look TOO close : )

I got a tad lost on the cruise this morning. Hope the day went well for everyone else : P

I assumed you just turned up for a sticky beak and then nicked off... Was watching my rear view for you to come off at the first exit but you just disappeared!

I was going to go on the cruise/BBQ etc, but I didn't have any idea of the route as I don't know brissie at all. By the time I got out of the carpark everyone had gone!

Oh well, nothing like spending a couple of hours on the highway on a sunday morning : )

:blink2: That should not have happened Tim. Not Happy Jan !!

Yeah it was a bit annoying as I was looking forward to meeting more of the club members, but I'll just catch up with you guys at another outing. There were some nice cars there. That orange LC with the tubs and 383 was a nice bit of gear!!!!!

Yeah, maybe I need to keep my opinions to myself. I've always liked people liking different things to others. If it makes you feel any better, I have a hot wheels car with writing on the tyres : )

HA! You reckon that's "tragic"?.......... There's worse than that, I'm gonna get decepticon symbols laser cut onto the tops of my billet door lock knobs. It's subtle and nobody will probably notice, but I'll know they are there.

Now that's a TRAGIC

I'm one of those tragics. I absolutely love it! But have got to admit it is basically a bogan look

Hankook is a good brand though.

Would hate to see 'Bob Jane All-rounders' in white writing!

In all honesty though I think the type of wheel also determines whether the white writing looks good or not. Older style wheels such as globes etc look good with white writing, but I don't think convos would suit that look.

Speaking of things from the 70s and 80s, does anyone have a decent (speco or somthing similar) shifter to suit m20 they'd like to sell me?

Dirtbag...
this ute looks positively awesome, against all possible odds. I want to do precisely this to my v8 LH sedan with full SLR kit (and slr dash/booster/everything else). right now it's faded red with red bumpers so what you've done is perfect, just wondering how it's actually standing up to the sun now.

the paint you used for the bumpers, I can't afford a re-chrome, what paint is this and how is it holding up? any chips? does it look like metal in the sun?

the matt black paint, can you tell me what sort this is? and how well is it holding up to UV rays? any chalky fading?

I was thinking the only way is to take the SLR kit off, sort any hidden rust and paint ithe car and the kit separately... then stick the kit back on with new shiny bolts and new rubber. any suggestions for prep of the bumpers/body would be great. also I have to take the roof back to bare metal because of badly cracked faded paint, really the only good thing about the outside is the chrome and metal everywhere (except colour matched bumpers, doubt they have chrome) is perfect. paint.. patches of it is missing the clearcoat and looks like faded red poo now.

I've wanted this look since the instant I bought my car.

Hi Mr Spark. The ute is just painted in single pack epoxy etch primer. I only painted it a month or so ago but seems to be holding up fine. I drive it to work nearly every day and it sits out in the sun, well mostly rain lately, and hasn't changed. I've even washed it and was easy to clean. Plus if it gets scratched or damaged touch ups are a breeze.

The bumpers are just coarse metallic silver 2 pack base with 2k clear over the top. Nothing special or expensive there. I'm in the same boat as you, can't afford to get them chromed. I'm a chronic cheap skate : ) Plus being 2 pack it has good chip and UV resistance.

As for paint prep, well I could write a book on that!

The short story is the new paint needs a good "key" to hold onto. If the old paint is in good condition it can just be scuffed dull with a sanding sponge and painted over. If the paint has cracks or blisters, it needs to be removed first.

I would recommend taking the body kit off to paint. It's always good to get all the areas under the flares etc painted too.

I hope that helps.

I've got a shifter I bought from rare spares a few years ago, not going to use it. Give us a PM if your interested Tim.

You got a whole page and you won stuff! :)

Oh and yeh, i did like the white writing on the tyres, but I think I have grown out of it.

There is a time and a place, and that was 30 years ago. We are just always looking for ways to stir you up, that's all mate :P It's hard work because you never do anything wrong...

Hehehehehe. Sorry about that folks : )

My mate with the green hatch came over the other day with his Chev C20 so I got a couple of pics of it with the ute. They look related somehow : )

And on a different note, my new toy arrived yesterday. It's a Dean Warbird. Lovely : )

Well I think that's about it for this thread for a while. I was going to put the 5 litre and 5 speed from my brothers car in the ute but it looks like I'll be pulling the VH45 Nissan quad cam V8 and auto out of our 68 Firebird and putting the 5 litre and 5 speed into that instead. So that means the 253 and crappy engine bay will be staying for a while.

Thanks for all the comments, good and bad (Bomber) hahaha.

Cheers.
