Needs some lady curves :D

Another thing I thought I'd have a quick play with was a steel 4 inch camaro/torana style scoop.

I started with some 1.2mm zincaneal sheet. I used the folder to put the small swage through the middle of the piece.

It's hard to see the swage as it's quite small, just like a torana bonnet.

Posted Image

You can just see the swage here. I wanted it to match the torana bonnet really well.

Posted Image

I've got a piece of 1 inch pipe I can clamp into the folder so I can do bigger radius bends than the machine allows. I thought this might be good enough for the side bends.

Posted Image

Posted Image

I just did a few basic pie cuts to get the front to angle down.

Posted Image

I traced the profile of the bonnet onto the lower edges of the scoop, then trimmed it to fit. Once that was done I used a hammer and dolly to put a radius around the base of the scoop, where it meets the bonnet. Then I tacked the scoop on.

Posted Image

I then stripped the bonnet, cleaned the scoop and put a lot more tacks on the scoop.

Posted Image

Because I don't get much time to play with my own little projects I put some rust converter on it so it can sit around for a while.
This is just a trial to see how easy it would be. I think this one looks OK but is a little bit squared off, so if I do another one it will be more rounded. I'll see how it looks once this bonnet is painted.

Posted Image

So what do you think?

The scoop looks similar to the one you had on your old barbados green SLR i think? it looks more like an really tall A9X scoop, does need a bit more curve where is joins the bonnet and to be a bit less boxy to resemble the camaro type scoop but i still like it.

Thanks Aido, I'll take that as a compliment. I wanted it to look at home on a torana, but the camaro ones have a massive swage down the centre which looks too big on a torana, but the torana scoops aren't high enough. That's why I modified the original one on my barbados car, so a tunnel ram would fit under it. You're right about the curve at the front. This one can just have a little bit of filler but if I ever do another one I can do that in the steel. It's not a bad start though I guess.

Hi Tim
I like the idea of what your trying to do, but for me I think the sides are too vertical to look right, I think the sides need to taper in a bit, although I know that adds quite a bit to the complexity of what your doing

Oh and I f I don't catch you again before next weekend merry Christmas and happy new year to you and your family

Cheers Michael

Hi cruiza. The sides aren't vertical, they're the same as a stock torana scoop, but now that it's nearly 3 inches taller it could do with more tapered sides. Making it with more tapered sides wouldn't really make any difference, so again, if I do another one one day I can do that differently. Thanks to everyone for their 2 bobs worth, as that's kind of what this whole exercise is about.

A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all too : )

Check this scoop out, i saved it because i thought it looked good on this hatch. It's sorta similar looking to the one you made Tim.

Fussy arent they/we
You got no worries mate it looks sweet as. If it had any more curve it may not suit the Torana bonnet anyway, the LHs had fairly flat paneling compared to an LJ, the LJ is a bit of a curvy tart and the Camaro.

Merry Christmas back at ya mate, be safe too may loonies out there.

That looks even worse....Swage line is...well.....wrong/not there/poor attempt???

Tims is way better than that.

Cheers.

I don't mind it, the swage line that Tim's new scoop has does look better, the one on this hatch is similar to the scoop he had on his tunnel rammed Barbados car.

This is what's hiding under the scoop on the hatch.

"I'll have to wait and see when this one is primed whether I need to make it out of multiple pieces to get the look I'm after."

Paint, Paint, Paint!

Give it a coat of black too...

Love the hatch but not a fan of tall bonnet scoops (prefer standard height).

I know you can't avoid it if you are running a high rise manifold and are trying to keep everything covered.

Sorry I haven't replied. For tight corners it's wire wheels, die grinder and paint scraper. Fun job : )

Well I finally found a pair of 4.5 inch convo pros for the front of the ute today. They're polished though and I'm not sure if I like the look of them so I might scuff the centres up again. I'll see when I put them on.

Posted Image

I think they'll look pretty good once they're all fitted. I think most cars look good with convo pros : )

I just have to get front tires and get the rear tyres stripped off the wheels that are already on the car and fitted. Then I can cross my fingers and hope the rear ones fit : ) Even though they're only skinny I still think they'll look good.

Did you like how I wrote tires and tyres? hahaha

I went down to my local Carbitz store and bought a pair of new HQ rotors. Cost a whopping $100 : )

Posted Image

With the camaro done I was able to stick the ute on the hoist. I love Mr Hoist hahaha

Posted Image

It's funny how new rotors look so good, until you use them once : )

Posted Image

Even though the rears are only 7", there's still a good size difference between front and back. I like that.

Thanks to Brett (myss427), I have a pair of 10" convos on their way. I'm feeling some tub stretching coming : )

Posted Image

The rear wheels have less backspace than the modified volvo wheels, so I'm not 100% sure they'll fit once the tyres are fitted. I was going to use the 225s off the volvo wheels, but I think I'll have to get some 205s to have any chance of them fitting. I could raise the car to make them fit, but that's just crazy talk!!!!

Posted Image

Posted Image

I have a pair of 165s to go on the front rims. If I can find some cheap 205s I hope to get the wheels and tyres on today.

Posted Image

I'm posting the next 2 pics just because I like the cars in the background. If only they were mine.......

Posted Image

Posted Image

I had the rear wheels converted to tapered seat for the wheel nuts, but couldn't for the front. Because the tyre shops around here don't sell a lot of centerline wheels I couldn't get hold of the right wheel nuts. I just bought some normal mag nuts and machined them down instead.

These are just regular mag nuts with 5mm machined off the end.

Posted Image

So that's it for now. I hope the rear wheels will fit with tyres.

I hope to get my hands on a 28 spline borg warner diff soon so I can shorten it a tad and get the 10s under there, but that's for another day.

Well, bad news for me. Front AND back wheels touch the guards. Pretty annoying seeing as the fronts are only 4.5 inches with 165 tyres. Oh well.

Posted Image

Posted Image

It sits pretty much at the right height even with the convos on, but the tyres are still touching the guards. I also found a rust bubble in the wheel arch, so I dug it out. Was bigger than I thought. Only surface rust where filler had cracked. Bummer.

Posted Image

Found a bit in the same place on this side too.

Posted Image

I figured I may as well grind the whole lip of the wheel arch clean to make sure there's nothing else hiding. I welded up the small hole and re bogged it. I guess now is a good time for a respray in a different colour : )

Posted Image

Posted Image

So now I have a dilemma. The easiest/least imaginitive way to fix the wheel problem is to go back to the old volvo rims. Another option is to run flares, but I don't really want to chop this up, even though I think the flares would look awesome. Third option is to run P76 front rotors to bring the front track in a bit and mini tub the rear to fit the 10s.

What do you guys think I should do? By the way, if it gets flares it also gets a bonnet scoop and front spoiler.

I'm also now having to think of what colour to paint it, so suggestions there too please : ) Just not yellow or silver.
