Did Toyota ever publish a torque rating for them?

It states the alloy T50 using more HP than the W50 ... I've broken both in Dattos
Some say they can take up to 240HP.... but its the torque that breaks them
But your talking about potentially fatigued metal on a SH box... so don't expect it to handle a healthy 308

I've broken them with non turbo 4 cyl datsun engines
Reving to 8000rpm with a locker diff on slicks on the track????

And it was 9600 rpm anyway

Yes.... your point ?
And it was 9600 rpm anyway
That would ruin just about any second hand box.
IMO if you are after sever duty such as this then HD bearings and blueprinting the box would be mandatory.

It was a fully race prepped unit
Except it didn't have straight cut gears...I didn't have the spare $3500 for close ratio straight cluster
I doubt anyone would put a Celica box behind a Holden and spend thousands rebuilding it when better boxes would be available cheaper

I didn't say mine was a SH box
Yeah you are right, you did not, don't know why I thought that sorry.

i rebuild diffs and gearboxes for a living , if i get a celica 5 spd come in i usually advise the customer they are better to update to a better 5spd if they can !. im sick of seeing dissapointed people bringing them in with chewed gears ,failed bearings and 5th gear falling apart! . the T5 has to be the best bang for buck 5 spd getting around !
cheers
totally agree with this, why stuff around with 4 cyl boxes behind a 8 when T5 s can be had so cheap now days.
The conversion is going to cost the same and a T5 can be had for $200- 300 where as a toyota box will cost $500- 750.
for a torana use a T5 out of a EA to AU falcon and your shift only moves back about a inch.
Hell ya can pick up shit EA-EB falcons dirt cheap take the box out and wreck out the rest, may even make money towards the conversion, lol

is the T5 in the EA-AU the same between 6 cyl and V8??
I believe so the only differnce is the bell housing.

t 5s have alot of different input shaft lengths there was a thread on this not long ago
there are 6 or mare different lengths I found the EA -AU ford one was the best suited to a torana, about the same length as aussie 4 speed and the shift close to original torana.
Good upgrade for any one running ford single rails, you can use the same bell housing with a little modification, then every thing bolts up.
clutch,Xmember, tail shaft, speedo all can be reuse on the T5

Yes you can you will have to put the gear stick in a vice and give it a slight bend as it touches the consul when in 5th and reverse. no major issues there.

I even went as far to mod the shift to look stock Torara. You must use a Falcon box for shift to be in same place as original Torana.
I run a falcon box behind a alloy headed 355 strocker that has run a 12.5.
I have broke 1 by dropping the clutch in third while racing but before that it had coped a fair bit of punishment, good cheap 5 speed in my opinion.
