Looks like it could be an 18R Toyota 4 spd.

Thanks guys,
Its definately 5 speed (celica or supra?). What is the better of the 2, celica or supra. Steel case or alloy?

Celica or supra is neither here nor there, more so is the 1st and 2nd gear ratios to be concerned about as these can be quite low for some applications, making 1st and 2nd too short, these boxes came in a range of cars including crown, corona, celica, hi lux etc etc. The 6cyl and hi lux version had the better roller bearings but the 4cyl box can be easily converted.
The steel case box does not like to be loaded up with heaps or torque and tends to chew out the gears, especially if you labour 5th gear.

Debatable on which is stronger but I am of the belief that the later alloy boxes had slightly better engineering and bearings (one extra ???) so the alloy box is considered stronger.

FYI the steel case as pictured by you is commonly referred to as the "celica" box or steel case - W50 or the earlier P51 (as used by Porsche), the later alloy box is reffered to as the "supra" box or the alloy case - W55/W56/W57/W58 basically the difference with these is the ratios with the W58 having the preferred set.

Celica, Crown & Cressida steel case 5 speed had ball bearings in cluster gear. Dellow Automotive offer a conversion consisting of heavy duty BMW type needle roller cluster bearings.

The hardest box to find and probably the most sought after is the 3.00:1 ratio 1st gear.
