I bought a set of heads at a swapmeet (with a manifold) and was planning to use them later on to build a 308.

Well plans change and now I want them out of the shed (sick of moving the frOckers around)

But I just thought Id ask if the numbers meant anything-

numbers cast in the head are-
2812174
19D
10

They were sold as L34 heads which im assuming were fitted to a whole bunch of things (L34 being the high output v8 right??)

If anyone could fill in the blanks for me?

Cheers,
Chris

Standard heads were normally just modified to fit the larger L34 Valves (Then referred to as 'L34 Heads')... I think the real L34 heads have a big 'X' cast into them. I'd say your heads are just up-spec'd standard heads... But saying that if they are in good nick should still fetch you around $250+ on eBay

Are you sure L34 heads have an X on them? I thought they were just standard HQ-HJ 253/308 heads modified by Dave Bennett.

I have seen some early pollution red motor heads with an X on them (possibly pilot ADR27A heads as fitted to some HJ's), and also some early (HQ era circa early 1973) (possibly pilot?) new design (HJ onwards style) 308 blocks with X on them. I and others have come to the conclusion that the X is there so the pilot design change items could readily be picked from the normal type being cast at the same time. Whether this is fact or not may never come to light, but it does make sense.

As I stated in that thread OrangeLJ references, the 99 numbers are simply a part number. The casting number of L34 heads should be the same as all other HQ-HJ/LH 253 or 308 heads as they are (as far as I know) just modified standard head. As to tell if a pair of heads is off an L34, hard one. Dave Bennett probably produced many more heads that were actually fitted to L34 vehicles, and also probably modified standard heads identically for aftermarket use. So my guess is unless you have an L34 with an un-opened engine i'm not sure how you'll ever prove the heads are the originals of the car. So trying to identify heads on the bench - good luck!

As per my previous post in the topic mentioned...

Hi guys, just lookin at these heads supposedly off a 253 commodore engine, the # is 9936122 on both of em.

Struck my attention as they both have the 'x-cast; in the head.

The heads have standard valves and a pretty bog stock.

So i'm pretty sure the 'x' is nothing special. Unless this has already been clarified?

Cheers

Mike

Alright, so im not losing any money by selling them on at what I paid then.

The heads need a service, and one is missing two valve springs and valves.

Came with a manifold too that Ive had sandblasted and is in pristine condition.

So Im guessing if I got my $150 back id be doing well.

hope this helps
gmh made 60 sets of 2812174 heads with the x on the end of them for the car that got dropped the gtr-xu2
all they where was the std head with little hier flow and larger valves which later became the l34 heads.

I bought a set of heads at a swapmeet (with a manifold) and was planning to use them later on to build a 308.

Well plans change and now I want them out of the shed (sick of moving the frOckers around)
