Hi,

I have just removed my original ignition barrel out of my LX hatch.

And tried to fit a rare spares one that I purchased 2 years ago as I didn't get around to fitting in during the build.

The rare spares type is different, it has no extruded section on the top like the original one but it has a smaller extruded section on the bottom that the original doesn't.

Where have you guys got your new ignition barrels from?

Has anyone fitted a rare spares type?

Does anyone have photos that could help me out.

Please see photos with the original one on the left.

I may be wrong but i think that your rare spares barrel is intended for a LJ torana, yours look similar to a hz barrel

do you by any chance have a UC steering columb? UCs have same barrel as a HZ

The barrel on the left is ADR 25a. Post Jan 1978. It has a different honey pot. You need to change the honey pot or the barrel.

the one from rares is a lj torana to 77 lx. yours is a uc torana / right up to early commodore type. just buy the right one and all good.

Yeah looks like a UC/HZ barrel. The one on the right is the same as in Yella.

Hi Youngy

Looks like youv already worked the problem out, but just to confirm it looks like you have a commodore/uc style ignition barrel that we sell as SL1004

Iv just re checked the genuine parts catalogue to see if maybe these were a late fitment in LX but iv found the part number the UC catalogue list is completelly different to both adr25a and pre adr25a LX

ive always called them either one ear or two ear switches. but yes the one ear switch came out in all models in 1978 with the back glove box lock not the early silver type.

I got a RS set mainly for the door/boot locks, and haven't even looked at the ignition because i had read that it was a fiddly bitch of a job.

Anyone know a straight-forward way to get it done (replace ignition barrel, assuming the parts are correct) ??

Cheers

Swapping the ignition barrel is a bit of a pain in the arse. The rest should be a piece of piss. My ign barrel was just off eBay, don't know if it's the same as the Rares units. I would suggest lubricating lots, looking at the rack and pinion setup in there and 'phasing' them correctly to one another, studying how it all works after you get your old barrel out. It's a pain, deburr the new barrel too or it will be harder again haha

What does it do? I've always used silicone spray and haven't had any problems so far. I used grease on the outside of the barrel though, where it fits into the bore.

That is the number one rule when it comes to any lock guys. Unless you are somehow pulling the whole thing down doing it and then wipeing it clean with alcohole before putting it back together you never put anything but graphite powder or a key in a key lock/barrel

Sorry guys didn't get to take photos as my old man had put the new barrel in while I was at work one day. Just prod around and you will find the recess that is covered by the casting, the hole lines up with the black tab on the ignition barrel, that needs to be depressed to remove it.
