Hey guys,
Just wanted to know if hq drums are the same as torana but with the only
differance being the stud pattern. I have had my torana banjo anxles redrilled
in HQ stud pattern and now i need to change over my drums obviously.

Cheers Blake

HQ are bigger and I thunk if you fit the larger HQ drums you run into problems bolting wheels up as they sit out further on the axle.

I never had that issue. I used HQ-WB backing plates and drums with shortened HQ (L34) axles in a Torana housing. When an axle broke I just stuck Torana fine spline axles back in and used HK-HG drums and ran different stud patterns for a while until I fitted an A9X diff. So from my experience they fit straight on, just use Torana handbrake cables on the HQ-WB drum backing plates. If there is a problem with the HQ-WB drums I can guarantee you HK-HG fit, would just need the stud pattern redrilled on the drums. However from memory HK-WB are the same drum just different stud pattern drilling.

It was actually HK drum brakes onto torana we had the problem with.
This is going back a while now and never resolved the problem so I stand to be corrected.

Perth car with HQ drums.
1ARC LX Project

The HQ drums are a larger diameter 10". The LX drums are 9" however they protrude past the axle face further than the HQ drums.

I remember once trying to fit a set of Cheviot Hustler mags from a HG Monaro on my LX. They would not bolt up because the cast section of the brake drum on the LX protrudes past the axle face. This results in the spokes of the mags hitting the brake drum before the BUF touched the axle.

I think you all missed the question
At least thats how I interpret it

He's got Torana brakes on the car still... but redone the axles to HQ for wheel choice
Now he wants a drum to suit

If thats the question
No you can't use the Q drum as its larger
And no theres not a drum that will do the job
So you'll have to get your originals redrilled to Q pattern or upgrade the brakes to the 10" Q ones
With corresponding changes to handbrake cables etc etc

Looks like you missed the answer. :)

The HQ drums are a larger diameter 10". The LX drums are 9" however they protrude past the axle face further than the HQ drums.

You may find that a HQ pattern rim will not fit with LX drums. The rim needs to have a raised section that fits into the LX drum. If the HQ pattern rim fits with the LX drum then the simple option is to re-drill the LX drum. Just hold the LX drum up to the HQ rim and see if the rim clears the drum.

Without a pic of the inside of his wheels we don't know do we

He could have used a spacer like XU1's did to clear... just like my LH has on it to clear the wheels

Spacers are not legal on an LX in WA. They will also push the wheels further out which could then cause problems with tyre clearance and wheel nuts.

Interesting that the article describes using the hq steering arms. This seems to be a different opinion to most of the commentary on this site.
Thoughts?

They were probably just confused or worded it badly, the HQ steering arms are quite obviously no good in that application
