Yea Yea, i would rather get this done buy a professional.

I want a few other older cars later down the track (obviously money wise) And i was thinking of starting work on them myself, things like a one tonner etc that are a bit smaller and probably a better thing to start on as a novice. I would like to see the torana done by a professional as the plan is to keep it forever (that may not be possible at some stage later in life but thats the plan!).

Plus the man at the sandblasters were the car is stored atm is pretty much looking to sell soon and cutting back on work and everything because he is pretty sick, and doing it at home is kind of impossible, plus mum would prob kill me.

Guy in mittagong said 1 maybe 1 and a half months. He has a sandman and another torana he has to paint and he has a mustang he is doing some work on too.

SO Im thinking of going to him, obviously its a month away but that isn't to bad. If i go to sydney or out of state im thinking it will make it harder in terms of getting it all there and checking in on it and all that.

Obviously space is a constraint, but you could rent a shed for a year and buy all of the tools you need and learn something along the way for less than you will spend getting someone else to do it :)

You'll be a lot more attached to the LJ if you have a go yourself than if you throw someone $15k to do it for you... It's just steel, mate, if you frOck up, you cut it out and weld it again. Paint it in acrylic, same deal... Make a mess, just chop the top off it and go again!

By the time you get it into a panel beaters, you would have it half finished yourself :)

Good Call,

I rented a Garage at a secure unit that an old man had for a couple of years at $25 a week in the next suburb.

The other good thing about somewhere else is that people who know where you live don't know you have a Torana somewhere else. Dave I

Paint fumes get you so high, no wonder all the painters i know are a bit weird...

44837_10152371723734625_947486406_n.jpg

Undercoated all the walls and painted the roof in 1 coat.

The little patern thing around the ceiling is a pain in the freckle to paint.

Walls are gonna be the same as the rest of the houes which is like a light coffee colour thing (forget the name) And where the 2 wardrobe doors are (that actualy don't have anything inside that i own) will be painted a darker brown and the doors themself.

I was originaly gonna rearange things like put the desk on the wall of the 2nd pic and all that but i cbf just keep it how it is and throw out a whole heap of rubbish!

Painting those doors is a pain, so time consuming undercoating each tiny slat thing

Every time I see a new post in this thread, I get excited because I think it might mean progress. Then I remember that you're going to be waiting for a panel beater until the end of the year, and it makes me sad.

DSC_1151_zpse00d0885.jpg

So broken....colar thingo. Lets take it off and get a new one. Might paint the whole thing black, im not sure yet.

DSC_1152_zps1f076e79.jpg

RAWR, why the hell would someone do that

DSC_1153_zpsfcf0d2e4.jpg

Pulled all the wires out.

DSC_1154_zps578330ef.jpg

Wasn't joined very well. Half a wrap if that.

DSC_1155_zps2729cf77.jpg

Took me ages to figure out how to get this stupid thing out, i was there for like 20 minutes. I don't even think i had to take it out in the end.....

DSC_1158_zps4e054ae3.jpg

uhhh.....Neighbours dog, with something that resembles a bomb straped to its neck.

DSC_1161_zps8578b9e7.jpg

So finaly got the top bit off (another 20 min) The little clip was about 1/3 down the spring so i didn't even know it had a clip on it. I read the book to but obviosly read the wrong bit because i saw nothing about it. Protip: Takes 2 people to put the stupid thing back on D:

DSC_1162_zps5ab269b8.jpg

WOOOOO all off

DSC_1164_zps1996c3e6.jpg

Dunno how it happend, obviously someone put something heavy on it or something soo.....We will just blame dad and hopefully he will give in and buy me a new one right?

Put it all back together because if i didn't, i would lose things and forget how it went back together. Dont think i got the key right with the lever thingo and the other thingo, but i gotta pull it all apart again to put the new bit on anyways.

DSC_1167_zpsbbba2aaa.jpg

DSC_1168_zps985ca9a5.jpg

Anyone know what thats off? Flew off when i was taking the key barrel out i think.....

SO.

I'll either paint it red same as the car, because im painting the lower dash (metal bit) the same colour as the outside.

OR

Ill paint it black.

OR

Something else..

Ideas?

Also:

Guy in mittangong has 2 cars to paint and i'm in.

Wankers in mossvale still haven't gotten back to me so im kind of over them. Dunno if ill even tell them if the car goes into richard at mittagong so i can frOck them around and get one back on them!

That little nylon sleeve fits on the steering lock bolt. There is only one needed so don't be concerned that you can see one on the bolt and another one sitting separately in the pic.

The spare one in this pic now resides in Hanra's Tuxedo Black SLR 5000

Hamo, have a read of this thread about steering column assembly.

http://www.gmh-toran...colum-assembly/

Cheers

Dave.

PS. I have since found info on a tool that you can fabricate to make installing the spring and circlip a walk in the park.

Will dig it out over the weekend.

Ah, ok thanks s pack.

Yea dad  had to push the spring down with 2 screw drivers and i had to put the clip on hoping the screwdriver didnt slip and stab me.

Only way i could think of doing it tbh.

Gonna put that plastic clip on and see if i can do anything else this arvo. Dad bought a whole bunch of plants to put down the terracing at our place though so that may be unlikly.

Also im not sure what else i can do.

I could prob get one of the doors from neil and have an attempt at fixing the little rust spot. Going on a bush walk with him tomorrow i think so ill talk to him them and what not.

Ok so, yea plants took up the arvo.

I can possibly paint my reco'd gearbox, paint is a bit dodgy. As far as i remember i needed a new selector so i might be able to find a second hand one in pretty good nick somewhere and put all that together. Prob paint gearbox black same as the engine.....Not much else i can think of atm.

Obviously that door. I have 2 drivers doors so ill pick the shittest one and try my luck see what happens.

Forget the black the engine was.....Im assuming just.....and engine black (im hoping there isnt many) Ill pick something similar, in the end no one will see it. And if they do and whinge about it ill slap them.

Had a go at getting the old paint off.

DSC_1171_zpsd221476a.jpg

The gearbox in question

DSC_1172_zpsfa9fb919.jpg

The old one

DSC_1175_zps1a5512cd.jpg

I rubbed that all off with my fingers, shows how crap the paint job was.

DSC_1176_zpsc59c291c.jpg

Couldn't get the last of the paint stripper out.....soo yea.

DSC_1177_zps98a3335d.jpg

Looks a bit dodgy but....i dont think i need a new one.

DSC_1179_zps06a70b19.jpg

And thats the best i can do D:

I used the grinder, paint stripper and everything i could thing of and i cant get that last lot off. Will  it be ok if i paint over it?

Anyways work over for today, neighbour is really sick so ill try not to anoy the family to much.

do do do do do

So its cold and raniing and its suposed to rain for 2 weeks.....so i though heat lamps would be the go.

DSC_1181_zps03a64cf6.jpg

So while that was "heating" i thought i would look for other things to do.

DSC_1182_zps61bba916.jpg

So i found these, and figured they would have to be painted eventualy

DSC_1184_zps9072a204.jpg

So i cleaned and painted them. So if i did  something wrong or it was to cold it would not be a full gearbox that i would have to redo.

DSC_1185_zps5d82f788.jpg

Also:

If i used the etch first and then the rust guard would that be ok? or would it wreck shit up.
