Shit.
Stick with the car dude...it's only money and if you give up on it, it'll haunt you
Personally I like Quag's offer - sounds a great deal.

Don't be stupid Hamo.

Let me expand on that.
You've saved up that money to do that car.
You obviously had the passion for it or you wouldn't have worked so hard and sacrificed stuff to save up to get it done.
Just because at this moment in time someone has said it aint worth it and you're wasting your money, doesn't mean you should give up.
I am speaking from experience.
It is YOUR car, YOUR money, and it will be worth a million bucks to you to have it back together, painted up and cruising around.
If in doubt, just have a look at "lucky the lime green metallic". Very soon there will be a start up video there and it will make so many people happy because they know where it has come from and have followed it from beginning to end.
Imagine how Grant will feel after all of his hard work to turn the key and hear a rumble and drive off down the street.
I'll feel the same about your car when you fire it up for the first time, and I'm sure I"m not alone.
Imagine how awesome it will be for you.
Who gives a toss what its worth, we told you what it would cost at the start and that it wouldn't be worth what a two door would be worth and your response was so what, so why should it change now
Posted 19 August 2013 - 09:29 PM
Sorry Chris, but that is absolute rubbish....
If i purchased a 2 door and a 4 door and the proceeded to spend $40k restoring and modifying (no numbers cars just s 's etc.). I bet my left one a 2 door would bring a fair bit more....
E.g. Lets assume we buy a rust free version in need of restoration. Assuming very or no rust due to someone elses work.
A nice 4 door complete car with all bits in various states of crap will cost around $5k.
An equally nice 2 door complete car with all bits in various states of crap will cost around $10k.
We then proceed to spend $40k on both to an equally nice rather good standard.
Lets be honest, this is a reasonable budget for a nice car, painted, retrimmed and decent driveline.
The 4 door will be lucky to pull $20k if put on the market.
The 2 door will be lucky to pull $40k if put on the market.
A 2 door will cost twice as much to start and be worth twice as much at the end....
Sugarcoat it all you like, but i stand by these assumptions...
The only reason there are so many four door lc/lj projects on the go is the builder cannot afford or have your thoughts in regard to end values.
In the end, i assume noone builds a car for resale, but it has to be in the corner of everyone's mind... Stop kidding yourself.
Cheers.
My thoughts exactly Skap.
Sure, fix-up your car, 4 door or not. Just don't pay someone else to do it unless you want a trophy winning show car, that is where you waste your money on other peoples labour. My car will be the best I can do, not some rich panel beater - spray painter. It won't be perfect but it will be all yours.

The main point for the possible sale is the lack of motivation or passion. It's been on the panel beaters list for like nearly 2 years (the one that #@$^%& me over god knows how many times with his so called "list"). I would of enjoyed having it all done and finished around this time but if i finish it off the way i want it i won't be using it as a daily, and i need another car.
And if i get a new job which will possibly be the army if i get fit again thats like over a 1 hour drive until things are sorted and i get a rental or use their accomidation (i think they have).
If i spend it all on the torana now i have nothing left. Hell i've saved up so fricken hard i don't have a phone, i haven't bought a new pair of clothes in god knows how long and i basicly have nothing. If im honest im kinda over it all. I would love to see it all finished but i dont think i would enjoy it anymore. Im sure once i get a new job and get on with things later down the track i will buy another older car and i will do it up i have no doubts about that but at this point in time it seems worthless and to save up the money again to move on after the torana is finished will take ages because to this point i have literaly not spent a cent on anything else.
I think the lack of passion is more out of my control with whats gone on but i can't really change that. I think the best thing is to sell it all (keep something to remember it all buy) and move on and buy another torana later on when im more financialy secure as well with the space, time and room to do it properly.
It's not really about the resale. If it was finished i would most likely never sell it but....yea it isnt finished.
And as much as it would piss off people i actualy prefer the 4 doors and thats why i bought it. I didn't care about the resale value and i still don't cause the intention was to keep it but now everythings upside down and things have changed.

I don't know if it will help, but here is my Torana story.
I bought a 73 LJ 2 Door in 2000. I completely rebuilt it on the cheap and loved that thing more than life itself. All the while everyone telling me I spend too much on it, go too fast, am a hoon, etc... But damn I loved that car.
Come 2005 and I have to buy a little Diamond ring, the car needs a good rebuild and figure maybe it is time to grow up and move on with my life. I sold the car for $4500. I figured I could buy another one when I want one and it will be great. Not so much.
Well, it didn't even take a year and I regretted selling the car. I still love my wife and the direction my life has taken, but I wish I had kept the car. So sure, buy another one. Well with 2 kids and a mortgage and the fact that the same car 8 years later would be worth $15K+ there is no way in the near future that I'll have another LJ in my garage.
I always say, the only regret I have in my life is selling the Torana. MY advice is that even though you are over it at the moment, think long and hard before selling the car.
Is this your "dream" car? Will you miss it in a few years. Will you have the funds again to do this kind of a project? Remember, things only get more expensive from here.
If it were me, I'd work on my welding skills, maybe take a class. I'd do all the rust repairs and take Quag up on his offer. $4-6K and you can have a decent streeter and then have $8K for a decent daily.

If the passion is gone and you have space, pack it up and store it. Use your 14k for what ever is best for you at this time in your life. The car won't loose value sitting in a shed.
This is the smart man.

I don't really have room to store it unless i can convince mum and dad to clean the garage out.
It's been at neils (sandblasters) for like a year and he has been very patient and nice keeping it there for me considering he is sick and looking at selling up shop still. Plus he hasn't made me pay rent or anything, and gave me a good price on the sandblasting.
Ill have a look at some cars and see what the right way to go is. Even if i keep the shell i will sell the engine and a few other things to gain a bit more money. I want a 4wd ute. Some may say thats dumb and impractical but at this point in time i do a lot of farm work and i would actualy like to go traveling australia at some stage while im still young aswell. And being just about 6 foot 4 the holden is out of the question because its frOcking tiny inside.
In saying all this no one has given me a rough price yet?
Engine cost bit over 4k ( i got the receipt) Plus the reco'd gearbox.
I dunno if i should at up all the other reciepts it might scare me.

sooo opinions asside.
Price?
If i sell it i've decided ill keep the door that i warped and fix it all up and possibly get some fancy mural on it at some stage and hang it in the shed. Providing i get a house with a shed. (also providing i get a house...)
