Hahaha. I just realised, Torana means "to fly" so I guess that's pretty apt.

Sorry, small things amuse small minds and all that

before any one gets in saying unimig is crap id like to say ive had my 180 amper since 92 and is still going strong. done heaps of cars and built trailers, welded diff centres etc. as for settings it comes down to what wire your running, gas, gasless etc. for panels its really the lowest possible on power settings and just enough wire speed so it doesnt splatter. just need to experiment and find you preference.

yea dads mate might help us set up the mig, he has been using them for ever.
It was either unimig or cebora. Unimig had the better deal at the time and we didn't here of anyone saying they are shithouse. HOWEVER everyone said dont get CIG lol.

I'll be interested to see what sort of welder you get and how the welding ends up going with it. Hopefully I'll be buying a mig in the next year or so myself and learning with it.

Hey also I've been watching this thread for a while now. Good on you for persisting with it. Looks and sounds like you've got some pretty good plans for this car.

Shit load of room without the torrie there now.

Are you using one hand to weld? Use your spare hand to rest against the material and hold behind the nozzle with your thumb and index finger to guide and control your welds. You want to be about 5-15 mm away from the material, and I have my gas set on about 15 l/min. Also clean the area thoroughly where you intend to weld.

As for Cigwelds. I have one and have done my entire car with it. Only thing I can fault it on is it doesn't do overhead on higher amp settings. But I'm not a welders arsehole. I was recommended a Cigweld by my best mate who entered a welding competition (his workplace put him up for it) where he ranked 2nd best in Australia, 1st in QLD. Not just your at home/backyard fabricator. End of rant.

clean up the steel before welding ;)

Looks like you are trying to weld through rust and old pain, not great for good clean welds.

Obviously you know that the blow throughs are from having it turned up too high, some of the "dab dab dab" looking welds could be your wire speed too (too slow for the speed you are moving)

Slow and steady is best, if you are welding on a bench with an under shelf, try putting a foot up on it and rest your elbow on your knee to stabilise your hand/s.

I'm generally a two handed welder for tricky stuff, one handed when Im tacking things up, but it depends on how heavy your lead/gun are

I agree I have a Cig200 and it hasn't missed a beat,I used it for my resto, built a trailer and done a number of different jobs big and small.
Anyone that says that they are shit may not be using them right.
I'm no eggy in welding and learned myself, but I found if you have good connection,a clean area,a steady hand and good wire speed you can't go won't.
Just my 2 cents.
cheers Dane

yea this was just trying to set it up for the first time, no real fancy stuff. I know when i do it to clean the paint off and what not lol, Trying to adjust the 3 dials is a bit more complicated then it seems when you haven't really done it before, baiscly just putting out some random lines until we got it right (which didn't really happen). Dads mate might be around on the weekend to help us out he's been using migs for ever. Dads basicly only used to stick welders before when he was a boiler maker the migs were only just getting popular or something. (works for ambulance now)
I did it a few weeks ago so the rusts just from it sitting in the rain after the attempts.

Liam i am only going off what 99% of people told me, if you have a cigwelder that works fine thats great but everyone told me to stay away from them so we just took their advice.

And i usualy use 1 hand unless im upside down under my car or in some other awkward possition.

Edit:
Thanks dane.

Trust me mate, two handed is much nicer and actually easier.

And once again, I think your mates are talking out there arse. IMHO. I know of several people on here who use Cigweld, and I think we all do some pretty usual and unusual fabrication, and if there are no complaints from them... Well you know how it goes, plenty of people bag UniMig, doesn't mean they are right. BOC machines are supposedly the ones you should give a miss.

One of our mates has a boc and would recomend it to anyone.

Also numerous shop suppliers put us off cigweld aswell not just our mates.
The place we bought unimig from (weldquip) said they no longer keep cigweld because they had majority of them sent back with issues.

But i suppose its personal preference aswell. If someone doesn't like a welder they will bag the shit out of it to mates and the cycle continues.

Had a play, should prob consider a welding corse at some stage.

there was a huge gap down the bottum bit here because i just found a piece that roughly fit so filling in a gap 3mm or more wide was silly lol

If I could make a suggestion, use spatter guard. You still need to clean everything before hand and get your settings right, but I think it makes the welding a little more forgiving. I also smash a bit of it up the tip of my welder, just helps make it easier to clean and stops the end from getting clogged with spatter.

My mig (I forget the make) only goes down to .8 wire which is a touch heavy for car stuff and is gasless but I think that with patience and the spatter guard it's working pretty well. Just little by little is best.

One tip I did get was that you only weld panel steel till it starts to go red then let it cool right off before going again. I think that must be easier with thinner wire but it has helped me with my panel work. Far fewer holes blown out lately. It does take me way longer than it used too, much less grinding to tidy it up though.

Cheers
Moose

much like anything, preparation is key. easier to weld when fit up is good and nice clean metal etc. looks like your getting there.
just wondering the last couple of pictures was that with gas? i would highly recommend a tafe course in fabrication and welding, i'm doing a cert one to make it easier to get an apprenticship at the end of this year. it's a lot of fun.

cheers

I was going to ask the same thing as Kieran,

That last series of shots look like you were welding with the gas off (spatter everywhere)

Yea last lot was with gasless wire as liam said.

Figured i would try and save the gas until i got better and started on the car itself.

before this gets to page 100 figured i will bump.

Quick update with the welder, used to to repair friends steel tray on a hilux, had to replace some of the floor, did a good job (no pics unfortunatly) dad did that tho cause i didnt want to frOck it up.

Car is still awaiting to be blastered.
Car is still on waiting list at panel beaters (might ring them up soon see if they can give me a rough idea of when they can get it in there)
Front end is at ray shelbys still. (might also ring him up and see whats happening.

Took all the doors bonnet and what not to sand blasters the other day aswell.

Still thinking of painting it red, not sure on which red though there is to many to choose from.
If anyone knows a deep red colour let me know (with pics if possible)

Hey mate its great how you're posting all these photos of learning to use the welder. I'm planning to do the same in the near future and find watching someone else learn something more helpful sometimes than watching a pro.

Sorry to put a pic of a Hyundai in your thread but maybe this colour would be suitable? Not sure of the name or code but being on a currently available new car would mean you could just go down to a dealer and get the code.

Posted Image

Or the colour of this bad boy? Not sure if it belongs to a forum member but I've seen it around in melbourne.

jeez thats a weird looking car.

Colour isn't to bad actualy. Another one to go on the list lol.

Yea learning how to weld for me would be a lot easier if ones boiler maker dad helped more. Mind you learning from your dad compared to someone else is just harder different and weirder imo.
Plus he hasn't been a boiler maker for 20-30 odd years but im getting there, have to get back to practicing soon but the weather isnt helping with no shed space to do it.
