I was under the Torana the other day and thought I'd look for the diff housing code while I was there. After a bit of scrubbing I found the code 2809_ _ TA. I've read this thread previously and was sure I hadn't seen any codes with TA in them. The last couple of numbers I couldn't make out at the time.
I believe that the diff housing isn't the original one for my car because I have a receipt from when the previous owner bought a diff housing while preparing the car for racing.
I know it has baffled axle tubes but don't know if these are original or not and it's currently running a 3.36 fine spline lsd.
While I'm at it does anyone know what would be the correct code for a 3.08 coarse spline lsd in a 7/73 lj s model.

My car was built with a 3:08 lsd, but later fitted with a 3.36 fine spline lsd with baffles and after disassembling it the other day they are definitely not factory baffles. So I believe that the entire diff housing was exchanged in preparation for racing as I have receipts for an entire housing with the centre and axles.
If you got a baffled housing with a lsd from the factory then why would anyone have taken that housing out and then fitted this one with ugly welds on the baffles when they could've just swapped the axles and the centre?
So there should be non baffled lsd housing codes also.
Hello JD To clarify things for you, The whole housing must normally be changed. To fit a 3.36 centre into a 3.08 housing would be an easier modification than the other way, if a stud and large big end nuts are used for one of the bottom fixings.
I have modified a couple of 3.36 housings to make the 3.08 fit, but this is not something that the average person would do.
Housings for 3.9, 3.55, 3.36 are the same depending if baffled or not. ( of course paint codes will differ ) they are listed separately in the parts book.
The 3.08 and 2.78 use the same housings, depending on Baffled or not. Paint codes are XM or what ever it is for a 2.78 baffled ( WX is not a code by official sources )
3.08 and 2.78 non baffled I have shown at the beginning of this thread.
The "Ugly" braze welding can be explained by heat transfer properties, i.e. the housing would need much pre-eating in order to reach the temperature to make the bronze flow, and by then the dispersed heat would make the bronze flow in a larger pattern than if thin metals were being brazed.

At the beginning of this thread I have shown that this is a 2.78 course spline housing, ( TF code as I recall ) this would be course spline, non baffled and likely to have been fitted behind a Trimatic auto with a white gearbox speedo driven gear fitted. This would be from S model 2 door or S or SL 4 door models.
