XU-1 diff codes and housing numbers

Hi to all,
I have the following Diff housing codes;

2.78 course normal DF 281072 1971 S model
3.36 course L/Slip WM 2823488 1972 XU-1
3.08 course normal DA 2809395 1970 XU-1 and LC & LJ GTR
3.08 course L/slip WM 2823388 1972 XU-1
2.78 course normal TF 2810717 1973 S model
3.36 Fine L/slip XM 9934111 14th Aug 73 on XU-1

I would like to know the numbers and codes for 3.08 and 2.78 fine spline as fitted to the 14th of August on, models and retro fitted to some others? Thanks

Further to this post I have now recieved information that a 3rd of August built XU-1 diff has a 4 G 3 date WM housing, when comparing this to my 16th of August XU-1 with a 9 G 3 XM assembly may indicate ( as long as the dates were in order ) that between the 3rd and 16th of August that the diffs changed from Course spline to fine spline.
This matches the break in production from the 9th to the 14th, with the 14th being the start of the final batch comming off the end of the production line.
Can anyone add to this finding?

The diffs changed from WM code course spline ( 3.36 ), to XM code fine spline ( 3.36 ) by the diff stamped dates between the 4th and 9th of July 1973.

Hi Mike, are you saying that an XU-1 completed on the 15th of July 1973 (my car) could have been fitted with a fine spline diff?

I ask this as I have a 3:36 fine spline LSD / baffled housing in my car at the moment - non-original. I say non-original as when I got my car it was a rolling shell with tags. So, the original running gear was changed out years ago but I managed to pick up a set of axles in 1989. I have often felt guilty about using the fine spline diff but hey, if it could have been fitted with a fine spline diff that would be great.

Hi Bruce,

Mike is saying the fine spline rear axle assemblies were produced in July but weren't used in production until approx 1 month later ie: August.

Hello Mike here, been away from the site for a while.

There also seems to have been fine spline diff replacement componets available when pre Aug 73 XU-1's blew their diff, I know of at least one genuine original XU-1 with known history which had fine spline componets fitted by the dealer to his 1972 XU-1

In general production terms Dave is correct there was normally a lag time between the date of the diff ( and other componets too ) to the vehicle production date.

There was also a lag time between the vehicle sales date for homologation purposes and the public sales date, but that is a whole different topic.

I was under the Torana the other day and thought I'd look for the diff housing code while I was there. After a bit of scrubbing I found the code 2809_ _ TA. I've read this thread previously and was sure I hadn't seen any codes with TA in them. The last couple of numbers I couldn't make out at the time.

I believe that the diff housing isn't the original one for my car because I have a receipt from when the previous owner bought a diff housing while preparing the car for racing.

I know it has baffled axle tubes but don't know if these are original or not and it's currently running a 3.36 fine spline lsd.

While I'm at it does anyone know what would be the correct code for a 3.08 coarse spline lsd in a 7/73 lj s model.

Well my diff housing is out and the code appears to be "TA 280833 " and stamped with 17B3D. 17 Feb 73 I assume, but not sure what the D means.

Has anyone got a picture of original diff baffles? Mine has baffles but I don't know if they're original ones or not as I think the housing may not be the original one from my car due to previous track work and receipts I have from the previous owner.

Has anyone got the parts manual handy to check the diff housing code for a July 73, 3:08 coarse spline lsd.

You won't find those part numbers in a parts book. Those part numbers are for the complete rear axle assy as fitted on the production line.

Complete rear axle assemblies were not serviced as spare parts.

280833 will be for a std 6cyl 3.08 or 2.78 rear axle assy. I don't believe anyone has worked out what the D stands for yet.

It appears I did a typo, the code was meant to be 280933, does anyone know what the TA means.

Pictures of any factory baffles would be good too.

James - post a picture - I've built and put two sets in both of my diffs. given the age of your car for the track the type of welding will determine POSSIBLY when they were fitted - eg braze - electric arc.

this is not to say that someone " did not braze them in "

AFAIK - all the original houses / baffles were brazed ( oxy ) in.

OK, cant see the 1st & last numbers. Only have _82348_ WM left.

Got the 2823489 number from my Feb 72 parts cat for 3.36 XU housing.

Mines 19F3...D btw.

Thanks Jono,The part number is for assy as Dave explained eg: the lj gtr 3:08 diff/housing assy number in the parts catalogue is 2809465 the stencil is 2809395.

Thanks for all the pictures and codes so far everyone.
I disassembled everything yesterday and they're definitely not factory baffles, it looks like it was someone's first attempt at welding.

Crabba, the code you listed (2809385), do you know what 2 letters go with it.
The first and last numbers on mine are very hard to read, so that code could very well be what's on there.
