Love a good deadline go son go!

Yes Barry " bingo " jackpot ! ERRR cannot count at the moment as well, did say it was 70 days, well checked today and now there is only 56 - FAAAAAAAARK !!

Countdown 54 - don't get confused with the commodor 64 - that's a computer and were talking torana's here and a trip to bathurst on the 6-10 of october !

OK, so we got over last weeks hump of a social media experiment gone wrong and how things get out of control. Was out there today to put the diff and front end in and " yes the focus should be on the work done" and it's been done really well by all parties.

I did stand back today and have a quiet moment on how far we have come and even if I don't make it, the car's been restored properly and that's the main thing when work is being done.

Ok enough of the sloppy shit, I've got a car to build

OK so update # 76 - the diff and front end

Put the rear diff back and also the front cross member. cleaned and found the front door check arms.

The inside of the boot , bonnet and front doors are painted - here is a sort of dodgy photo of the colour.

Dropped off the rear quarter windows and front quarter windows ready for paint all prepped

Rare spares - ordered A rubber kit - clips and new handbrake cables.

I only put the old front end in as the engine bay needs painting.

It's back to a roller - which allows to start the final prep stage for paint.

Factoid - whilst rummaging through the parts I had, i noticed something, when I cut the TA 4 cyclinder up, the bolt size for the four link suspension arms are 3/8 ( or there abouts) and the rear diff in the 6 cylinder model is 1/2 inch. So if you think that you can use a rear off a TA 4 cyl and then graft it onto a 6 cyl front then you will need to check this out and drill out the holes and get new bolts, the trailing arms " top " are a different length as well.

1 more millimeter - 56 days to go !

Go Go Go there's a bunch of people who wanna see you at the mountain to shake your hand and say well done.

Countdown - # 50 days to go FAAAAAAAAAAAARK and double FARRRK !!!

vinney's chroming - turned up today

starting to sweat.

Going to try to get some other things done this week end.

Just opened them up and they are great finish, but there is one of the front quarter window lower spigots that is discolored and I am sending this back to them tomorrow.

Still waiting on the wiring harness from Vinwire, they have had it for two months and it's not started, gave him a rev yesterday on the fact that it should have been done.

Nigel from extreme fuel has finished making the choke levers and also the other levers that I needed so, the manifold can go back to him next week for fitting of the carby's and also the linkages - one down

Chris,

still moving forward. but there are a few critical things that need to happen;
1) I need the car painted and returned - no paint on car yet
2) the wiring harness - there is some F$^%K up with the company and a staffing issue and they have fallen behind
3) paint and re assemble the steering column, rear quarter windows and front quarter windows , rear light surrounds

the main issue is the time needed to put the car back together and break in all the parts. On the next week end i'm going to;

a)finish the front end and put fully back together ready to roll under the car
B) tomorrow - going to the warringah brakes and see howard the Boss and ask for some special treatment, if the car comes in late for the brakes and clutch
c) see the trimmer and talk to him about fitting the car up ASAP
d) see the engine builder and getting it all fittted up- csrby etc and extractors
c) off to the auto electricians and wire up

anyway we will keep the dream alive. I have faith in my ability, but i have no control over other peoples.

I'm seriously considering putting up my spot for the Xu1's on the mountain to someone else at this stage , but I'll make that decision closer to the day.

Chris, i'll do you a deal, if i don't make it with the car, I'll give my spot to you and your car so long as I get to go round the mountain with you in your dad's car with my two boys.

I might have to throw the roof racks back on for the mountain then Grant, we got me Azza Johnny and the sister going down for a lap so it might get a bit squishy in there, there's barely enough room for Azza's personality as it is lol I'm hoping you don't have to bum a lift at all and the green machine makes it there. No more mils dude it's time to start making up meters.

I know it's outta your hands at the moment (which sucks) and the only advice I can give is be absolutely ready for when it gets home cause it's gunna be mahem.

OK So it may be 40 days and counting, but today I reached some calm on the whole thing, i don't really give a shit about bathurst and making it. If it happens that's great.

I just love the whole resto process and don't want to finish as I enjoy it.

so without further ado

Back to the update stages # I think 77 - how to cut a car up ! BAW AHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! Baw AH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

1) cut the four door, up today, she has given her last today, her selfless soul for the GTR and it's mighty lazarus rising - that's the John Howard book where it took him about 55 goes to become prime minister !
2) finished off some garage cleaning for the arrival of the new baby back
3) did the last part of the rat trap re build - an old guy gave me a hint and it was to weld washers on this part of the arm to fix up the elongated holes left by wear, also have a new nut coming for the rod arm
4) Vin wire rang today and said that the full new wiring harness will be ready by the end of the week

i have to say that when i bough both of cars the GTR and the four door they were both brisbaine cars built on the same month, so all the date coding of the parts is correct, I was such a newby that i didn't even check this out on the cars, so I have ended up with a total date matched car - motor - gearbox- diff - etc - see lucky again

so here are some more photos of the journey so far.

They were designed and made with elongated holes. The wear usually occurs on the sides of the holes. If that makes sense.
Don't really know why they were made like this, I can only surmise it was something to do with engine movement.

Bingo - it takes a lot of work to fix one of these mouse traps, you virtually have to re build it from one end to the next, the pin in the pedal box also wears heaps and if you don't check it while doing the car, if it breaks it means that you have to pull out the whole brake booster and stuff to get the pedal box out to fix.

The trick with the moving arms at both ends is - tap a female thread into the main arm - then over drill the 38mm lever arm that attaches to it, then get a bush and slip over the bolt and then put a nut on the end, this way if the bush wears out, you just un screw the bolt and slid over another bush over the bolt and re tighten up and grease.

Hi Grant.

So you cut up the 4 door mate you will have room now for your beast, the rat trap looks good also and the fuel tank also.

Regards John.

yes john, it's just like getting ready for a new baby, it was a milestone to get the garage cleaned out ready for the new car to come back and doing some planning so i can work out where the car needs to sit

what happens if you leave elongated holes?

not sure jacob, but it just means that there will be more movement in the arm that attaches the lower trap arm to the bell housing area, and if there is movement it will just wear other parts in the system quicker, so it's an easy fix to weld the washers on each end.

Ok so today - it's update # 78 - the glass cleaning ready

1) Fished out all the glass for the car and started to clean it up, picked out a full set with very little scratching in them, it took ages to get clean and ready.
2) I have to replace the metal channel on the bottom of the drivers side main door.

Again, if you have to take this piece of metal off or the window frames off the glass then use a heat gun and go slow, it's nearly impossible to get them off otherwise.

After a pretty good clean, used Autosol to give it a bit of a glass polish, they are all done ready to be re assembled.

Gary , yep it certinally has not been through trying hard enough to get there from my end. I even considered " wrapping " the car in the film wrap like a carbon fiber look similar to the one in " unique cars" last month the GMC.

In some instance gary have not put up all the photos of the panel work as it was a bit scary the amount of parts that were replaced with rust free quality parts, I can say that there is not 1 piece of rust left in the car, it's all gone.

i'm pretty sure that the old girl has been on the track at some stage and done some racing as there was tell tale marks on the car to the chassis rails that you only get from a trolly jack. we have repaired these dents in the rails and you cannot notice them now, also the fire wall was knocked in at both sides and this may have been for a bigger bell housing and also the hydraulic clutch assembly to clear the fire wall. It's still got the tail loop on as well, but cannot find any evidence of a roll cage. I have contact CAMS they have a historic area, but you need to give them some specific dates and categories in which the car raced to sort this out.

i also wanted to make a record of tips and tricks for restoring these cars so other people can learned what I learned in doing this. Stay tunned it's going to get better !

Update #79 - Just to let you know it's " lucy the lime Green GTR's brithday " yes this was the month that he was born in the brisbane plant, he has a older brother that is an XU1 , a sister that is a torana S , his dad was a LC XU1 and his mum was a LC gtr , they say that he took after his mum in the power department, but has tried to turn into his DAD many times over his life !

Ok so whats doing again;
1) the tank has been POR 15 and this takes some time to do so leave your self all arvo on a warm day
2) vin wire has finished the brand new wiring harness and this comes back today - YEAH
3) nigel from extreme fuel has finished the carbies and they will be on the ported out manifold - he had to make up brackets for the carbies - great bloke to deal with and helpful if you need something sorted then give him a call
4) got the spare metal runner off the second good window glass and it's all ready to re assemble on the week end with the vintage tape will post on this as well - but did some trial already.
5) sending the fuel line to be re maid to day at warringah clutch and brake and also starting to discuss clutches and maybe order it.

1 more mill.

Hey Mike,

i'm pretty sure that you can consider youself and EX newby, I think that you now have reached MASTER PANEL BEATER !

I have an email which I will send you via a PM.

I have never built cars before but I can built a house and it's the same principal - 1 brick at a time.

tomorrow the heater box is going together and i will post the photos and tips on this. big thanks to grant jurd (brocks72) on this for finishing the top of the heater box.

If you need your heater box - re finished - with the original look with the rough feel and also the white fibers showing then PM brocks 72 in this forum. i highly recommend the heater box finish

update # 80,

1) assembled the front chrome work from vinneys into the front windows - you will need to get fiber washers for two of the chrome attachments - and drill one of these internal sizes out as it will not fit over the spindle
2) repaired the exterior/ interior of the heater box were it was fractured and in need of some TLC
3) painted the internal blades in order to prevent further rusting
4) the vinwire harness came back - gave them this - got this back
5) started to weld up the arm off the rat trap, but was not sure which side to weld the washer on so this came to a halt - bloody hard with a stick welder to weld this low in section of metal - just need to weld washer on and re drill

1 more mill

the photo of the clutch arm seems dodgy - but it got a lot better - just didn't take a photo of the end finished product. just takes a lot to build up the worn part without blowing out the metal.

the harness in the box is what i got back, it was also what i gave them as well it's fully new in a plastic bag from end to end. they bleach the plastics but internal is new
