Update #94 - rear window re assembly

Well I had the following;

1) advice on the rubber thickness 1/32"

2) the window surrounds - all painted

3) the method in my head - when over and over the approach

4) did a test run on the short frame side - it worked

5) applied the " rares rubber spay "

What when wrong;

Well the rubber fitted the short side, but it was not tight but it seemed the right fit

then started to mould the rubber the whole way around and get the shape - see the photos and you get the picture.

slowly removed the pegs and sprayed the whole rubber with the rares rubber spray.

slipped the frame onto the glass and instead of " hey presto " the larger frame was not as tight on the rubber tape.

I got 1/32 and it depends on the amount of paint that the frame has

I then doubled it up and this should give me about 1/16.

so i need to order another role.

bugger

1/32 0.03125 3/64 0.046875 1/16 0.0625

PS; if you powder coat your frames you need the 1/32 if you just paint then either go 3/64( probably the right size)  or 1/16 will be really tight.

update #97 - have another go ya mug !

Ok Gents, some times you just have to have another go  and the rear quarter windows is one such task that requires a few things;

1) patients

2) beer

3) experience of failure at first attempt

Zoob, kindly gave as much as he could with advice and I like a lemming followed his direction - the second time.

So here is the real McCoy on the rear quarter windows re fit;

step by Step

0) ensure that you have beer open and the kids are away for the purpose of dropping the F word when it does not work

1) ensure you order the correct thickness " windscreen tape " it comes in different sizes - if you powder coat you need thinner if you paint, put the glass back in and use feeler gauges to check what size u need.

2) place the glass in the vice to secure with rags , no need to fully tighten the bejeeezus out of it

3) get the windscreen tape and heat gun mould over the glass - but do not worry about the corners where the tape will buckle if you try to bend and kink

4) spray the Bejeeeeezus out of the frame and the OUT side of the rubber that will slip into the frame

5) slip the frame over the rubber and slide down and continue to spray with " rares rubber spray "

6) use a rubber mallet or very soft part to " bash the bejeeeezus out of the frame and ensure that it sits down correct

7) I'm not going to trim off the rubber off till it settles and i put the end on

In the end it was F #%K ME it worked and then i open another beer !

Also did some olive picking with the kids today and ended up with a shit load !

Grant

Make sure you seal the mitre joints of the frames with sealer as you put them together. I used Bostick black windscreen sealer.

Update # 98 - FARRK me i can count nearly to onne hunndered

Ok so the cheese and kisses say's to me last night in bed

"you know the money you have spend on this car we could have bought a campervan and gone round australia and three years is ridiculous and it's not finished  ?

my brain thinks

" if she only knew the shit that when down "

" she hates camping and with three screaming kids - what is she thinking ?"

I then say

" absolutely nothing back and just slide lower into bed, hoping to not aggravate the situation further "

After five minutes of silence she then say's

" i hate camping and good night"

I then say

"that's nice dear."

sometimes no defence is the best defence.

anyway back to the story.

1) went to Extreme fuel - nigel and the carbies will be ready next week and discussed fuel regulators seems like 3 psi or pound ( not sure if it's pound or psi) - but got a regulator anyway

2) picked up the new rear bumper and bolts

3) got a GTR grill badge

Car will be back next monday

I have a car that I have purchased that will require repairs and being able to do it here is easier than trying to transport a car that has no wheels.

Happy to pay somebody but just want somebody honest

cheers

Glenn

Dealing with the wife is just one of the many hard things about building a car I reckon. And yeah, silence is a good defence. Loving this build: good technique, cool car, a bit of controversy and some marital advice. It's got everything! :-)

Update #99 - we have trimmer

OK so it's update No 99 and have been working on the following

Tip no 1 - I had original windscreen that i originally clean some of the stuff off with a metal knife ( spatula)   and put fairly fine scratches on the screen ABSOLUTELY SPEEEWIN big time. so decided to try to rub the marks out with Surfers PAradise mag wheel cleaner.

After much elbow grease on both side i finally was happy with the screen and the finish - so you can clean up the screen.I'll post some photos later, but it saved me $300 and I can live with the screen.

So have both the screens to go back in.

the car is at the trimmers for the head lining to be made and fitted and top of the doors put on back and front.

tomorrow need to run the new electrical wires for the interior light and put the door check straps on.

Thanks for the tip on cleaning the screen, I have a wiper scratch to try and remove.

Grant, has the fun level increased now the car is painted?  or just as good as rust repairs? (stage I'm doing)

Cheers

Marty

It's really hard to gauge with the screen BUT if you pick a point or part in the scratch and focus on the part and see if you can rub it out then it will work.

BUT i would say a wiper arm scratch may be a bit deep to try this. Otherwise it's $300 for a new one.

You just need to be able to sit behind it and not be pizzed off with the position of the scratch.

i'm excited about where the car is, but just need to get the trimming done so i can start the real fitting of the car, had to run the new wires for the interior light yesterday and put the door catches on yesterday.

Sussed out a few things and have been continuing to find bolts, clean them and get ready for the fit up.

the carbies are ready to pick up and that's another job done as well.

three big things to do;

1) carpets

2) tail lights - gene may be helping with this

3) fuel lines from the pump to the carbies

I'm pretty amazed with the car but it's been three years, cutting rust is sort of the easy part - it's the whole deal that takes time.

The other thing we used to use to polish glass/perspex is colgate and brasso. It actually works really well as they are both super fine polishes.

cheers
