I grabbed this today to put 'something' on the roof of my VN which used to be light metallic blue before the paint turned to crap and came off.

Does this stuff work to prevent corrosion or just expensive fancy paint?

Could I use it instead of an etch primer?

I've used it on a few small bits and pieces when I'm in a hurry and it doesn't seem to have any problems going with other paints. Its just a cold gal paint as far as I know, should be reasonable rust protection but its not a rust converter so prep is still required.

It's good for 'holding' for a few weeks, maybe months, but it isn't an undercoat.

When time comes to paint it, wipe the gal off with thinners.

I've been using it on some rust repairs to ward off the rust. I ran into a bit of a problem though....... The sh!t is fairly hard to get off. I wanted to paint an enamel paint over what I've been working on but the enamel says on the can "not recommended for use with zinc based paints" so I used a wire cup brush on it to get the zinc off but all it did was polish it. Not having an electric sander, I had to do it by hand and now I've worn a few layers of finger skin off :(

Sounds like decent stuff then?

How about putting primer over the top then painting? Would acrylic paint be Ok?

I don't know much about paint, and it's only on the VN roof...

Ah Ha! Found this on the CRC website-

Overpainting
Conventional enamels should not be used over zinc rich primers unless a barrier
coat such as Etch Primer is first applied over the Zinc It coating.

Doesn't say anything else about other paints though.

well there you go
seriously why bother
save that stuff for a gate or something and etch prime the crumpledoor roof
seems like a lot of hassle for a small result

Damn! I could have gone over it with etch! My poor fingers.... :( I only used the zinc because it was convenient and it dries almost instantly.

"save that stuff for a gate or something and etch prime the crumpledoor roof"

It goes on nice a thick, and this way I won't have to finish it for years!

Hmm, wonder how it polishes up? Might do the whole car... Posted Image

I spray stuff that i whip up at home out of gal with it, just hit the welds, lasts ages around the house, i also painted the intercooler pipes on the nade with it cause it was handy, but i wouldent use it anywhere on a proper car build.

Cheers.

Cheers for everyone's replies.

I don't plan to use it on the Torana, just the VN.
