I reckon an old style letterbox would look great on this car.

I think a letter box would look better than the Hornet, might see if Rocket sells them. I must say a big thanks to you Craig for sorting out the fan guard for me, really appreciate it, it came out tops.

Where did you get the rubber bumpers for the fan guard? I think it allows it to sit on the top of the rad tank without being metal on metal.

American Auto parts sells old school letter boxes IIRC from last year.

The rubbers came with the fan guard, it's a Rare Spares repro one. Yeah the two larger rubbers are to prevent the guard hitting the radiator, the smaller one to stop the guard rubbing on the bonnet. The guard itself needed some work to make it fit, not just to clear the larger radiator, so bear this in mind if you decide to purchase one.

these are the cars we should be seeing in mags like street machine not mega buck but mega buck cars are over rated at least you can actually drive these cars.

Bloody 'ell... epic work Matt! Surely it wasn't that long ago when I saw this car and drew inspiration from your quality work and attention to detail?!? I haven't been gone that long and you have finished it! I gotta pull my finger out.

Love the colour.... looks fantastic. Super clean lines. Jealous much!

That car def DOES NOT need new plates. I'm a big fan of old school plates on old cars. Totally compliments that good honest car that it is!

So.... what's next? The SL/R finally? :D

Hi Anton, good to see you back & thanks for your compliments. Yep my SL/R is next, saved the best 'till last. I've got two weeks off the end of april so hoping to well & truely get the project moving along. If all goes well it might make Toranafest this year. Looking forward to seeing your project progress too.

I put alot of hard work, blood & tears into this car & i think i've done a fairly good job restoring it, it handles, stops & overall is a much better & safer car than it ever was but despite all this, i can't seem to be able to get the car registered with the new engine. I always thought because they came out with a 308/tri-matic option i'd have no problems, obviously i was wrong, now i'm left with some hard choices. Do i part the car out when the current rego expires in July, do i source a wrecked 6cyl Torana to return it to it's original specs ( blue slip still needed, from recent experience i'm sure that'll prove near impossible) & sell the drivetrain, or do i let the rego lapse & end up with an unregisterable dust collector? I really like the car & ideally would like to keep it but i can't afford to keep an unregisterable car. Any opinions respected & appreciated.

I assumed any LH/LX shape could be regoed with 308. mine was a 4cly and i got a 304 fitted no dramas. Had a bigger shitfight when i went to rego it with a 186.

So did i, i thought because the car is still registered & LH came out with a 308/tri-matic option, it is an owner certified modification & all i'd need is an adjustment of records (blue slip). Thing is, none of the blue slip inspectors i've approached want to know about it, either point blank won't do it or tell me i need an engineer's report.

What do the engineers say??

I know what your talking about, Cant find anyone who wants to mod plate the rear disks on my LJ either.

Cheers.

Got burned to the tune of $1000 by an engineer when i tried to get my LJ 5.0ltr registered. Three inspections later, he was still adding more things to change or do & the car had already been engineered with a 4.2ltr V8 before. Figured he'd never write up the report & was just ripping me off so i gave up & sold the car un-engineered & unregistered. Very wary of them now & not too keen to fork out another $1000 to be told i need to re-engineer half the car to meet their standards before they'll even consider issueing a report. Fair enough if i'd fitted a 600bhp SBC, coil over rear, mini tubbed etc, but my car isn't that heavily modified.

Have you tried to contacting the technical department of the rms. tell them your specs and see what they have to say.

How can they possibly not let you register an LH with a 308? As you said, as far as I know this should just be classified as an owner-certified mod. Have you tried going to different RTA offices and trying it on them? Surely heaps of others on this forum have registered LH and LX's with 308's without needing an engineers report. If it were me I would just try a different RTA office and play dumb, not that you should have to, until I got the thing registered.

Considering the work and hassle you've put into this it would be a massive shame to sell it because misinformed clowns won't allow rego.

Ironic you should mention misinformed clowns, when the last blue slip inspector told me i needed an engineer report i called the RMS technical standards & the person i spoke to said only an SL/R 5000 can be owner certified because they were the only Torana to come with a 308 option & because Torana "S" didn't have a 308 option, i need an engineer report. Then on another occasion an RMS technical standard officer informed me that i did need an engineer report because the only Torana to come from factory with a V8 was the XU-1 ???? Just trying to work out whether i should start looking for another 6cyl LH to donate it's running gear while my car is still registered, or just cut my loses & part the car out. The drivetrain cost me over $10,000 & has done less than 1000kms & i know i'd be lucky to get half that back if i sold it, probably not even enough to cover the cost of buying a rusted donor car judging by what i've seen them sell on ebay recently. Guess i'd get to keep the car though, but then judging by the attitudes of the blueslip inspectors i've approched, i'd probably have issues trying to re-register the car with another 6cyl too.

Don't be too hasty in removing the engine, find another place to get a blue slip, you only need do an Engine NO. change.

Appreciate the input, have tried several blue slip inspectors, they either won't do it or tell me to get an engineer's report. When i tell them LH Torana had a V8 option from factory, they tell me to check with RMS, well i get a different answer every time i call them. If this car has to go through a comprehensive pit inspection, or engineer report, it'll never see the road again whilst in my ownership. It is a 38 year old car & as much as i've tried to build the car with reliability & safety in mind, i'm almost certain i'll end up with a list of things to be replaced, changed or repaired longer than my son's Christmas wish list. Even brand new cars aren't perfect, i know because i've worked for a dealership & can come straight from the show room with faults.
