This is my starting project car. It is a 1970 LC GTR. How you see it in the photos is how l purchased it. I drove last weekend to NSW, round trip of 2000km's. It came with 95% of all bits. It has been recently taken back to bare metal and painted in original color which is Mediterranian Blue. The original interior is Sandalwood. I have just placed an order with Dash Original to retrim seats and provide door cards. They are also restoring all dash, console etc components. It was the color and interior combination that l really fell in love with when looking for an LC GTR.

The car didn't have original running gear. It has a 9' diff with 3.55 gears. The motor is a 202 with 179 stage 3 head, roller rockers and 175 triple strombergs etc and it has a Supra 5 speed. Not really sure what l have got with motor but wasn't really my focus when buying the car. I will give motor and box a tidy up with paint and new components and put it in and see how things go.

I have no experience with Torana's at all. Whilst l am a car enthusiast, my other car is a HK GTS Monaro, I have no experience at all when it comes to putting this car back together. I have always been into cars and found that l really enjoyed the project management side of restoring the Monaro. However to date that has been more about just getting bits and pieces of the Monaro like bumpers, interior restored. Therefore now that l have a rolling shell in my garage and boxes upon boxes of bits and pieces this all feels a bit daunting and not sure where to start.

For the moment l have decided the first thing l want to do is get the wheels and brakes worked out. I am really keen to fit 17 inch wheels to the car. At this stage these will either be Showwheels or Longbeach Customs. I want the stance to be perfect. I love the look of the rear guard sitting over the top of the wheel so it sits just above the rim. However l am not going to cut the car and now realize there is not a lot of room under these little cars. After searching around l have been in contact with McDonald Bros in Melbourne and the car is going there in the new year. They are going to look at shortening the diff and maybe moving it a little to maximize the space in the wheel arch. I will also be putting aftermarket disk brakes all around. Not sure whether these will be Hoppers Stopper, UPC Components or McDonald Bros. Will depend on price and also which ones have the best geometry to work with wheel and stance l want. McDonald bros were really helpful and will work directly with wheel/brake provider to ensure it all comes together. If l can't achieve stance with 17's then maybe will have to come back to 16's.

Once I have that completed l need to put back together. That's where I am a bit lost at present. Obviously l would love to try and do it myself and it would be more cost effective but l don't have the ability. So l think l will need to find a panel shop to do this. I will also need to find someone with LC/LJ experience as l have bits and pieces that l can't even work out what they are or where they go on the car??? Have a full bucket of nuts, bolts, grommets, springs etc with no idea where they go!!!!

Anyway that is part of the 'experience'. To date l have received great help from people on this forum which l greatly appreciate. The one thing other than the color combination that really attracted me to the car was that paint and panel had been done. So l have a good base to start with.

Anyway will keep you posted of my progress. Hope l don't wear out my welcome with questions on the forum. My goal is to have completed by about June 2011.

nice paint n trim combo. i reckon 16's would be better than 17's on a little torry...17's could look too big.
look forward to seeing the end product.

great looking car! really love the colour, and the body looks dead straight.

definately agree that 16's may achieve a better stance than 17's. depending on the wheel i guess but 17's could look too big

good luck with putting it back together, should be an enjoyable learning curve and very satisfying

cheers

Have been doing a few things so thought l would give update. I have ordered most things required from Rare Spares. Full rubber kit, glass, window & door mouldings, badges, dash lens kit, console, interior door and window winders along with a number of other bits and pieces. Basically decided that if they made a replacement part l would buy it unless l could restore existing to new condition. Went to Melbourne last week and took all parts that required rechroming to "Vinney's", picked up new carpet from Knox Carpets, did changeover of brake booster and cylinder, instrument cluster to "Howard Instruments" for full restoration and dashpad to the "Dashboard Doctor".

Am organising interior to be packed on a pallet to go off to Reg at "Muscle Car Trimmer" in QLD this weekend. Interior color is "Sandalwood". Not using Dash Original now.

I decided to have a go at restoring the upper and lower dash along with heater control. Dash Original cost was going to be close to $1,000!!! I am happy with how they come up.

I also put Dynamat down over the past few nights. I have auto electrician now going to set out wiring.

Hi Macka

That is one very nice car, great colour combination.

What did you use for the silver on your lower dash? It certainly came up very well

Keep up the good work

Regards Simon

Macca ,

us this software to re size your photos. click on the down load.

once done - use the top right drop down folder and click " open " then select the photo- then go to " image ' top middle and then click " resize "

drop the pixels down to about 300 and this should get the photo in perspecive better.

Thanks. It was just one of those silver paint pens from newsagent. Just followed a thread l found here on how to restore. I didn't have a steady enough hand for the round ones on the instrument cluster and those don't have a good raised edge like the others. So l have taken it to a local sign writer for him to do those.

thanks for that, certainly turned out well. My hands aren't too steady, but I hadn't thought of a sign writer,

I bought one pack from Rare Spares for around $280. However l only used about 2/3. Thinking l might do doors with what is left over. The one l used was also the "Rally" version which is lighter.

Hadn't really considered it. The car came with full set of original rims and centre caps actually. I have decided to leave the rims until I have finished so it will start life with the originals rims. So you never know l might like what l see??

Sorry but 16's or 17's will grace the car!!! However I am certainly thinking 16's may give a better look and stance.

Car is away getting brake lines, fuel lines, rear drums and GTR XU1 spec disk brakes on front. Have just put new water pump, oil pump, sump on motor and have painted all. Also gave the rocker cover a bit of a polish with some steel wool but will give a good polish with Autosol before doing the final fit on motor. Also painted the gearbox just to tidy it up.

Got some of the chrome work back and just waiting on headlights, grill and tail lights.

Also ordered new Showwheel Intro "Westcoast". They won't have the small bolt around the edge and have black on the inside so will look similar to Sprintmasters.

Ok some progrees about to start. Collected car from paint shop last week. Had to have rear end repainted to GTR spec as it was done in UX1. Have all my chrome work back now, new glass has arrived, motor and gearbox ready to go in and wheels have arrived. Will be putting motor in this weekend and doing a trial fit up of wheels on front. Rears dont fit as 9 inch that was in car when l purchased were made to standard Torana width and therefore l will need to get 9 inch shortened. The only thing l am now waiting on is the interior. Reg from Muscle Car Trimmers in QLD is doing that. Reg said it would be ready last week so expecting call shortly. Once motor in on the weekend will be taking it to mates place and he will start piecing it all back together. I will help when l can on evenings and weekends. WIll keeps the updates coming and plenty of pics. These are my new replica Sprintmasters that just arrived. Still need to be painted yet.

Would a set of globe caps fit the wheels?
