Hiya. Yeah I just ran it through the shrinker a bit more to get the curve I needed.

Hey Dirtbag, did you use a shrinker for the quarter panel or just english wheel or both??I would have to do the same with our Pontiac.

I used the panbrake to put the swage through the middle of the panel, then used the english wheel on the top half to get some crown, and the bead roller to put the lower swage in. The rest is just hammer and dolly and lots of yanking on the panel. To get the lower half in the correct curve I just reefed on the lower half of the panel while holding the middle of the panel down on a workbench. This gave me the twist in the panel it needed to sit flat on the car.
I hope that helps.

Oh, the answer is no, I didn't use the shrinker : )

Talented - no, ugly - yes : )

Well I did a little bit more today.

I fully welded the new wheel well in and then made the lower edges to meet up to it.

Then I had the fun job if wire wheeling the rest of the inner guard so I could etch prime it all before welding the new guard on.

Posted Image

I also prepped the other guard repairs for etch primer, including the underside of the spare wheel well.

Then on with the etch primer.

I can't remember if I put these in earlier or not, but the front end is powder coated now.

Well that's it for now. I've been doing a fair bit of rust repair to a 55 kombi ute but I wont bother doing another VW thread, so there'll be a little while before my next update.

I planned to build the escort with the big works rally flares and cool paint/roll cage etc just for some cheap thrills, but my brother might be interested in me building it for him instead. Whether he gets it or I build it for myself it will have big flares and big wheels : ) Oh, and stripes.

Awesome thread Dirtbag, have been following it from day one. I cant believe the ease in which you make your repairs look factory. The owner
(that is if you give it back) must be rapped in how thorough you are in making these repairs permanent. The only problem I've got now is that
I want a HK-T-G Monaro and I cant afford one! and I blame you for that.Keep up the great work.

Looks factory, cant wait till you weld the quarter.
Will you Oxy it or tig or mig??

Well even though I've been putting most of my focus on the 55 kombi ute, I couldn't help myself from tacking the new quarter on.

First thing I did was get it into a position I was happy with, then tacked it on in a few places around the panel, making sure it was all sitting flat against the car.

Posted Image

I use a 1mm thick cutting disc to cut the small overlap off as I go around the panel tacking it on. I much prefer to butt weld panels together, rather than overlap them. I don't mind an overlap in floorpans for example, but not in panel like this.

Posted Image

I'm doing lots of little tacks, with the welder turned down pretty low, as I'll do the main welding with the oxy. The mig is really good for getting it into position though.

Posted Image

This just shows how easy it is to line up panels for butt welding when you cut along the edge of the outer piece with a 1mm cutting disc.

Posted Image

I'm really happy with how the new panel shaped up. Even though there are no welds holding the front of the guard in place it's still sitting nicely against the car.

Posted Image

More tacks.

Posted Image

It looks pretty good to me. Better than the old panel anyway.

That's all I did on it today, as the kombi is taking most of my time, but I'm pretty happy with how it's turning out.

Thats a reaaly nice job mate, even when you didnt tack the front as you said it was still in line with the rest of the original panel. Shows you got the shape right.
Oxy will make a nice clean flat weld.

Well I did a little bit more fiddling on the monaro today. I used the mig to weld around the tail light, and where the lower part of the wheel arch joins on to the original wheel arch. Excuse the lousy pics lately, my camera died so I only have my phone.

Some more tacks along the underside as well. I still need to trim the lip under there, but at least it's tacked into position now.

Hopefully next week I'll be able to spend some decent time on it and get the welding done. Then I can start on the other side : )

Great work Tim, have you ever thought about building a rotisery for doing this sort of thing

Hi cruiza. A rotisserie would be really helpful with jobs like this, but the bonneville is going to be on there for a long time, so wont be able to get another car on it any time soon unfortunately.

If I wasn't such a poor bugger I'd get another one, but the house has wiped me out!!!!
