Looking for a good panel shop for quote

Hey there,

I'm chasing a decent panel shop to do a quote on my torana somewhere around forest lake thats not flooded out.

We were driving along the mt lindsay hwy coming up to the browns plains exit when a 4wd with a trailer lost control and nearly side swiped us and unfortunatly we hit the guard rail so the passenger side of the car is damaged but thankfully the front passenger guard copped the worst of it but there is some damage along the doors, 1/4 panel and bumpers. It was a bloody frightening experience but thankfully we walked away unscathed with minimal damage to the car compared to what could have happened. The other guy came very close to rolling over and was sideways across both lanes just after I braked so were really very lucky we weren't injured and the car wasn't written off.

The guy is with aami and we have no insurance so it would be better if it is an aami approved repair shop but I am also looking for someone that understands the true value of these cars and will repair it properly.

We have already had one quote done at jks auto refinishers at tradlink drv browns plains but I think we should at least get a couple of them. We stopped at plains panel and paint but they said they couldn't do a quote without a claim number (it only happened this morning) and even then they couldn't do a quote till early february.

get as many as you can
as ammi will go for the cheapest one
and you only have to present 3
research the best ones and present them
you are lucky in thier policy (afaik) as for cars over 3 years old they will use recycled parts

Thanks for that Quagmire, the one I got this morning was almost what I paid for the car so I'm a little worried about them making it a repairable write off. I get the feeling they are going to underestimate its value as well. I really dont want to lose this car as it is near impossible to get any old holden without serious rust issues and I love my car.

I will get as many quotes as I can and give them the more expensive ones, maybe I might be able to get them to pay me cash so I can repair it myself.

Quagmire is correct & If you care about your car & wish to keep it, try for a third party cash settlement. AAMI work on a multi-quote tender system where the cheapest quote wins, which leads to poor quality & sometimes unsafe repairs. Even worse, their market value guide for Toranas would most likely render your car un-economicaly viable to repair, in which case they will "write off" your vehicle, pay you a measly pitance of it's true value & keep the car for auction at a salvage yard such as Pickles. I work in the smash repair industry & as such, have dealt with most insurance companies including AAMI so this is just my observation & experience from working in this industry.

Thanks for the info mate, at least I have an idea what to expect now and I get the feeling I'm in for a bit of a fight to get fair value. Hopefully I will be able to get some decent quotes and go for a reasonable cash settlement.

Thanks for that mate, I do have a mate that is a panel beater/spraypainter but I just want to cover all bases incase I have to use a repair shop.

No probs Dave. Unfortunately you may be in for a hard time getting just payment, but i honestly believe it's worth while. Your Torana looks to be in exceptional original condition & as such, it deserves to be repaired properly, not bogged & butchered. I also believe all panels are repairable by a good tradesman, so you would want to get enough cash to be able to pay for quality repair & paint work. As the saying goes, "you get what you pay for". Hey Matt,

I really appreciate the offer of assistance, I will more than likely shoot a few questions your way . Quite a few years ago I was in a similar situation with a vb commodore and I managed to get the payout I wanted but I wasn't that attached to that car. Your right this car really is in very origional condition, I even have the origional wheels, centre caps and plastic wheel nut covers. It might be the time to give it a sympathetic restoration and a full respray as the paint is getting a little thin in places. The guy I took it to today is an old holden man and has his own torana, he is planning on repairing the guard and the work I saw underway in his workshop looked good to me but I'm not a body man either. Thankyou again for the help.

If AAMI are given authority to handle the repair side of the claim, i believe they can, though i could be wrong. They tried to do this to me a few years ago when one of their insured drivers ran a red light & did this to my Torana.

They tried to get out of it cheap & offered me $500 for the car less salvage. I refused & argued that the car was worth more. They disagreed & told me their market value was $1500 & i had to show reciepts i had for new tyres, transmission etc before they accepted my arguement & paid me $1499. They were going to take the car until their assessor realised there really wasn't anything left of value in the salvage. Insurance companies are like big brother, they have the power in the automotive industry & it can be a painfull experience trying to get just compensation from an accident, even if you're not at fault.

Lh slr 3300, man thats not a pretty accident. Thanks for the info, I guess I will have to wait and see what I can do. It looks like it's going to be a while before anything happens because of all the flood damaged cars up here at the moment and the fact that a lot of people dont know how to drive in rain up here so there's been a lot of other accidents recently.

I now have the claim number so at least I can get it down to an aami approved workshop to get a quote from them but I dont think they will give me a fair quote. I'm going to have to get a day off work soon to organise a couple more quotes otherwise I think they will try to screw me over.
