Well, finally got to do another one of the "little" projects I've had in mind for the car..
Little while ago I wrecked out a '99 Chev Suburban (had an order for the engine/trans over there) and I had kept the compass/temp rear vision mirror and had thought about adding it to the car. After having a heap of late model Chev's around I had got sorta used to looking up to the mirror to see the outside temp (and now and then for the compass) only just have to relearn that with my new 2011 truck since they moved that stuff down into the cluster
Anyways...I grabbed the outside ambiant temp sensor off the Suburban too and the wiring plug that goes into the mirror.
So yesterday I found a spot for the sensor, and ran the wiring. Finished things off today. I also made an aluminum plate that mounts to the headlining to blank off the factory mirror mounting hole. I machined a slot on the back of the plate for the wiring to pass under as well.

Came out pretty neat I tihnk, and the mirror also has auto-dimming if someone comes up behind you with the high beams on.

Total cost for the project was $0 basically since had everything around for it. Hid all the wiring of course through the roof and inside the A pillar...

And the compass is not coming up yet since I need to drive around a little so it can self calibrate. I do that tomorrow and it'll be good to go!

First the blank off plate for the roof I made...

And wiring ran through...

Figuring out how the mirror would look in place. It mounts to the windscreen like most all late model ones..

And finally installed and working :D

Oh, and lastly...where I mounted the ambiant temp sensor. On the Chev's they mount just behind the grill along the core support center brace. I found this handy spot for it and it clipped right on, in the old spot where the factory bonnet cable had clipped on..

Jeff, your car is becoming more and more like the space shuttle, only cooler. Nice work. :D Will the ambient temp be affected by the engine bay heat with the sensor there? Sure you thought of that, but just asking.

Well...the trucks have the sensor in a similar sort of spot (further down though) and while moving its great. If you stand still in traffic for a long time in hot weather it can go up a couple degrees from the ambiant heat. Once you are moving it settles back though.

Not one of those things you have to have, but what the heck I thought :)

And think I might go to the cruise night tomorrow in the car, will get a few pics if I have time to head over there!

Oh, and you can see abit of the orginal headliner color in that pic too...the interior in the car was a tan.beige ? ish color factory and the previous owner has spray dyed the hood lining (and swapped to black carpet and dash pad) When I do all the interior I will put a new hood lining in it...

You can mount that black one under the passenger side dash and use it for a bottle opener.

Looks awesome.

Whats the general feedback on the car? Do people know what it is?

No one really knows what it is, but one guy tonight actually did know it was a "Holden" at least!

But another guy didn't believe that Australia actually built cars (or had race tracks either)

Basically no one really knows what it is, but everyone seems to really like it and thinks it's a cool car. (and of course do get the comments about the steering wheel being on the wrong side)

Oh, and the defroster worked good coming home tonight...cool and foggy out.. ("winter" time here and all)

I mentioned the old Pontiac GTO, the Pontiac G8, the Camaro, along with all the other Holdens, Valiants, etc.. he still didn't seem to catch on.

But after all the years of having the cars here, I am used to those types..it is cool a few more people have a general idea what the car is, even if not knowing just what it is.

One guy really liked the engine with the intake and coil packs moved around, Said it made my LS1 not look like another "plastic" late model engine..lol
