Hi.... I'm curious, has anyone out there used these 308 heads & if so, have they had any problems?

I know that quality parts cannot be beaten when building an engine for performance, and that YT-9 or COME heads are the most desirable, but I'm just wondering how the ATR/ProComp heads compare to a standard cast iron VN head & how much room there is for improvement compared to the benchmark YT/COME heads?

I have a set of precision custom sheetmetal r/covers that the bolt holes dont line up!! I built an engine for a mate at least the bolt holes lined up but after tightning the covers up you could still move the gasket with your finger. Would have put them in the scrap but had already had them polished and catch can fittings welded in them.Had to get them machined as they were over 300 thou out!!! Another blown clevo engine I know of had these heads on it and all the exhaust seats fell out of the heads. What a mess that was!!!!!
STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For anyone over here that need a warning, these are the guys that are flogging the procomp gear on trade me (though they often don't name it as a brand)

I got ripped off too, back when I had more money than sense (and hadn't done my research)

Sadly the local rare spares is also stocking their crap

Out of interest. A mate of mine purchased the same set of heads, prior to their "more recent reputation" was known. They actually worked very well, he had no issues with machining or fitment and they flowed around the same as VN cast heads. The car was a healthy 13 second Torana. Guess he was one of the lucky ones.

Not that I support their product but just found it to be interesting. Can't comment on any other of their products though.

Must agreed i fell into their trap as well some many years ago - before the news got out..

However not only did i buy the set of alloy heads they offer - i also bought the 355 stroker kit as well ! through EGay and said well known procomp reseller

Since then i have been unbale to convince anyone to remachine / rebalance the rotating assemblys as in their own words, "it would cost more in mallory metal to get them to the right weight than to buy a new replacement chinese crankshaft" ( as stated by crankshaft engineering )
In addition to his comment, they added the indexing of these cranks is quite poor, and further more, the key slots are usully out as well so best of luck gtiing the cam timing within cooee as well..

All of this has been said, without a single micrometer being put on my gear as yet..So who knows

But the common knowledge is the hardened valve inserts tend to fall out of the head as they are cold pressed in....bad bad bad in an alloy head

So in short, i have 2 alloy heads and a rotating assembly which i nows use as a clearancing aids for grinding the blocks and so on for the stroker kits to be fitted. Better than damaging a nice come crank or the like i suppose

Personally i wouldent.

Just pull it out, pull it down and start again.

If you re ebay the stuff now before it breaks you will get back more of your losses.

Cheers.

They get away with it because the consumer... i.e us... are essentially tight arses
We know better... we know the brand names that work... but we want cheap
So we buy crap

Well... you guys have
My heads are Patroits out of USA :)

You have to research the crap out of everything before you put money down.
There is nothing in this life that is cheap AND high quality....except shaggin the missus
As the saying goes, you get what you pay for.

Ps. I'm getting AFR heads. And yes the pennies had to be saved up.

Just curious Kush, did you buy the AFR heads with the high exhaust ports which need different headers ? I'm looking at a set myself and I'm wondering if other people think the extra expense is worthwhile like I do.

Don't worry - you pay one way or another :-)

Toranamat69, yes I know what you mean...... It just works easier in my head if I think of it as free, because I don't hand over cash before the deed. :)

Bathurst-racer, I haven't ordered the heads yet, but I will get the 210 mid year. I've been looking around at top end (heads, intake etc) equipment and I just know that's what I want. Wherever the exhaust ports are won't bother me because I'll be building the pipes to suit. Sorry I can't be more help.
