Believe it or not, I think that is quite fixable. Hang in there mate, mine has been #@$^%& from the moment I removed the paint. I haven't even got out of the engine bay yet. Just keep plugging along.

hey Liam thanks for the vote ot confidence... wish i felt though. just seems there is rust everywhere i look and as i have never done any type of car restoration work before i am just feeling a bit overwhelmed by it all, i dont think im able to do the standard of work id be happy with. There's no way id ever sell her so ill just keep stripping her back and doing what i can saving as much money as i can before i send her off to a panel shop to get done right

here's a few pics of the rust im going to have to deal with, id like to try and do as much of the work myself as possible but at the same time i want it to be done right and look good so i think i need to find a panel beater.

thats the R/H/R chassis rail

the L/H/R inner guard/boot floor

around the rear windscreen and parcel shelf

the front windscreen plenum under the dash is a real mess!
plus if you been following the thread you'll know i have already cut off the L/H/R lower quarter, the rear beaver and the front radiator support!
this project is very low budget and it feels like im getting nowhere. this years goal was to get the running gear sorted so i can atleast drive it out the garage but when i think of what needs to be done to get it to that stage i dont think it will happen this year.

Trust me mate, that's exactly the same as mine. Mine has rust everywhere, it just takes time and patience to fix. And a MIG. Honestly though, get some basic panel beating tools, and a mig welder, a sheet of Zincanneal .95 mm sheet and just start. After a a little bit you get more confident with repairing the panels and you will find it alot less of a job.

Dont worry about the doors im sure you can fix them or replace them, as for your rust repairs just tackle them one at a time even if its the easy jobs first then tackle the hard ones afterwords.
I did not notice your reply on engine cover til today. Ill send you an engine cover (let me know what side) for free, just pickup freight your end.

I was in the same boat mate! No panel beating or even welding experience but after a bit of practice and a decent amount of research, things didn't seem so dawnting! This site is a wealth of knowledge and every job you'll face, someone has already completed. Just imagine the satisfaction once she's finished.

hey guys thought today id share some good news with you just for something different. i decided to trial fit the dash bits and peices i picked up from the wreckers last year i think it looks pretty good. now i think the black dash was an "s" model thing but i think it looks better than the woodgrain. since this is the first time ive seen this car with a dash, i bought it 7 years ago and it didnt come with one , im really happy with it!
ps: yes i know its a commodore steering wheel but the car didnt have that either and thats all i had spare

Woodgrain dashes are very 70's... I like plain colour interiors. Nice pickup then, looks in good nick.

heys guys hope you all had a ripper Australia day yesterday I did a bit of lamb on the spit so while that was cooking i decided to head out to the garage and see just how bad that l/h/r rust is so i got stuck into it with the wirewheel... bloody messy job lol

it was good to see no more hiden rust in the c pillar that holes big enough already but as i grinded away i saw that there seemed to be a lot of bog in the bottom of the quarter i ran out of time before i could grind it all out but i went around the edge to try and see what im dealing with... as always with this car in some spots the bog is 15mm thick!

hi guys how things? alright so tonight i went out to the garage and started to chip away the bog in the rear quarter, its too dam thick to grind out and the garage already looks like a winter wonderland with everything being covered in a thick layer of white. ok so i guess im somewhat pleased to say i didnt find anymore big holes of rust. what i did find was the quarter is damaged with the bog hiding a dent, nothing to bad and since i intend on getting a set of flares i think it should be ok. if you look closely at this pic you can see atleast 2 layers of bog the top one being pink and as i said before its atleast 15mm thick.

hey guys need some advise on what to spend my money on, there is the great southern swap meet on at the end of the month so il wait till after that but would like to know your thoughts, i got about $2000 to spend so what would you get first? heres my wish list in random order
1. fuel system- i want an EFI suitable drop tank with in tank fuel pump so i dont need to run a surge tank
2. cooling system- i need a radiator and auto oil cooler and twin thermo fans
3. diff/rear suspension- need to get the commo b/w diff shortened then need all new rear suspension- springs, shockers, sway bar and rubbers and control arm bushes
4. front crossmember-all new bushes and rubbers, new sway bar and rubbers, new front springs and shockers
5. brakes- hoppers stoppers front end, commo stud pattern to match rear disc brakes, commo master cylinder and booster.

ok so there it is what would you do first, the plan for this year was to get her running and movable but by the look of this list im going to run out of time and money before the years out!

hey guys been out in the garage again today having a bit of a play around, this is what i got up to... took my boot lid off and took it into work the other week, i got a mate thats pretty good with the welder so got him to weld up all the little holes from the Torana badge. im going to have the sl/r bobtail wing so all the holes will be hidden anyway but mainly i just wanted them welded up so i could pratice grinding them back and cleaning them up, the boot lids not the best with little dents and grind marks in it from the previous owner so i figured if i mess it up its not that big a deal and like i said it will be all hidden anyway.ok so heres some pics

hey Hayden thanks mate taking baby steps at the moment but yeah slowly getting the hang of using these new tools, with the boot lid i used the grinder with a wire wheel to take it back to bare metal then with the welds i grinded them down with a flapper disc. i think i held the grinder at the wrong angle when i was grinding back the welds because in some spots it gets a bit wavy but by the last weld i got the hang of it and you cant even tell it was there so yeah happy with that. now i know how to do it when i got to tackle the l/h/r quarter and beaver but for now i got other problems with the r/h/r quarter. can anyone give me some advice on how to get rid of cellulite in the right side of her bum? this is what i found after i ground out all the bog im thinking it might just be better to weld in another section this looks beyond me. Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image
it dont really show up to well in the pics but the whole quarter is wavy and pushed out of shape with hammer dents all over it!

hey guys hows things? well i promised to fit a mates gearbox to his commodore so i had to clean all the crap off my torana so we could push her out onto the street. so as a result my torana saw sunlight last weekend for the first time since i got her home last march, wow the year flew by for me without a lot getting done but just seeing her out in the sun got me all fired up and wanting to do some work to her! Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image so i decided to pull out my spare engine crossmember and see if i could strip it down and rebuild it. i didnt have a spring compressor tool so was kinda shiting myself but got it all apart no worries, getting back togeather wont be as much fun i bet! i started out only doing one side and after a bit of stuffing about i managed to get the spring out. looking at it i think the set of rear lowered springs out of my old vr commodore wagon look like they'll fit in nice, think i read that somewhere on here is this right?

Yup I got this delivered the other day, very happy with the level of service & the kit looks good. I couldn't be bothered hunting down all the bits, & in this kit you're looking at a combination of Whitline, Mackay & genuine GMH rubbers so I think its well worth it. Here's the link to a discussion about it, & Hanra has put it in his front end as well (mention in his project I think)..

hi all thought i would show off my latest buy off ebay. i picked up an sl/r steering wheel for $185 bucks! the only thing i can see wrong with it is its missing 1 allen key bolt for the horn pad and there is a small skuff mark on the wheel grip but when i saw rare spares wanted $400 for a reproduction one i couldnt pass it up... it was in sydney and the guy selling said local pickup only but since i was headed up there for the weekend already it was too good to pass on so i put a bid on it and won. im rapped with it!

Nice project mate, intrested On how this comes out I am almost at the same stage As well.
Just intrested in how you gonna go about registering the car in Vic with the injected 304?
Does it have to be engeneered?

Cheers
Nick

hey Nick not sure on how ill go getting it registerd here in vic but dont think it will be all that hard since the LH came from factory with 5litre v8 so its not like im dropping in some monster big block or anything. i will be replacing the original fuel tank with a drop tank which is EFI suitable with an in tank fuel pump. im going to upgrade the brakes to discs all round using a hoppers stoppers kit with commodore stud pattern and i only want to run 15" wheels so i think it will be all good. might be worth consulting an engineer just to check it all out but cant see it having any real problems
