anyone know where to buy the 2 bearings on the worm drive of the steering rack for LC / LJ?
are they a standard bearing or special holden part?

I stripped a couple down today that were worn or damaged and am going to rebuild

Was a long time ago but from memory I got new ones at a local bearing service. I don't think they are anything special or exclusive to Holden or TRW.

You're talking about the 2 thrust bearings....I rang the local steering shop last week and they are very hard to get.
Please let me know if you find any so I can grab some as well.

tried 4 places today, none had them one could try locating and get back to me,
one said that he heard the people reconditioning the units were machining the housing to fit another bearing, so may have to look at that as well,
also spoke with another forum member and he said these have not been available for yrs and he would strip several racks till he found a couple of good bearings to use
hardest part is the number on all the bearing faces has been damaged or abraded so can't even look up the part in bearing catalogue

the bearing place that was chasing for me found a company in england that has them, don't know if maker or retailer. according to torana parts list the 4 cyl rack has same bearing so they would have been used in vauxhall and bedford hence available in england.
but if you supply part number, thanks or if you wish to part with your stock I am interested

been looking into these bearings, rang up a steering reconditioning places in QLD and sydney and both said when they recondition torana steering racks they use the best second hand ones they can find. sometimes they dismantle a rack just for the bearings. so someone should look into getting these made up. rang holden and they have not sold these bearings for years.also with no part numbers on them the bearing places are not interested.

genuine parts catalogue list this as 7156338

it should do from torana to commodore with manual racks aswell as the equivilant era ford cortina's i beleive

iv spoken with a few people about them asking what they do to fix them

Paul at Prestige power steering is a good bloke and has a few LH/LX toranas so he naturally knew alot about these but has come to the same conclussion as you guys have that you have to reuse originals, they bought a few old stock ones but now adays have a collection of more easily sourced commodore racks to strip for parts, according to him he finds the bearings arnt normally the issue though its more the actual gears that are stuffed, he mentioned the only ones he normally has to replace are on racks where the boot has split and it has gotten water inside, according to paul he approached all the normal bearing companies for an off the shelf item years ago but nothing existed that would suit

we would be willing to give them a try though graham so if i got a sample off you that would be great?

The number of the bearing is not all that important, take measurements (outside & inside circumference & width, roller, ball or tapered) then search the bearing companies.
