Hahaha! LX Torrie Freak, youre a nut! My welding skills on panel steel is ordinary...... Gas pipes....well yes, I'm awesome :)
My ultimate goal is to make the car look kinda like one of those artist impression concept pics...... It's a bit hard to explain, so I'll just post as I go. Some people probably won't like my ideas initially but once they see them finished, I think they will see the awesomness. I have the picture of the finished car in my head so that's what I'm focused on. This isn't a "UC to LX conversion" it's a "Torana hatch to Awesomness" conversion. All done in my back yard with a hammer and a welder :)

Notna, I had to use a shovel to get that crap out!
Note to self- remove all surrounding bog before trying to line up anything!

Everytime I log on here to check out what's going on, you've smashed through even more then before! Truely inspirational! I know a many of us have lots of pipe dreams at times of what we want and will do to our projects but you really are making it happen. I guess the car did sit around for a long time and your making up for lost time. Keep up the great work mate!

Gday Kush,

im following this thread with heaps of interest, basically using your progress as how to guides. So thanks. Just a quick one what did you do about the chassis number on the inner rail? im thinking of cutting the lip off but its pretty much where the chassis number is.

Also did you fully weld the gap/joint between the chassis rail and the wheel hump? Any tips of smoothing the welds in this area?

Hi keg006,
Regarding the chassis rail to wheel hump question, yes it is seam welded. Just like any welding on panels though, I was very cautious of putting too much heat into the steel so nothing warped. It took a little while to do.

Smoothing the welds down, I use flexible grinding discs on a 4" grinder. They are a grinding disc that looks like a cutting disc but they act like a course sanding wheel. You can run the disc back and forth over a weld and it doesn't "jar" like a normal grinding disc does. So they are really good for smoothing down welds.

Erm, the chassis number? I don't know what you're talking about LOL! (pm sent for that one) :)

hey kush, looks beautiful mate! credit to you. was wondering, after all that great work smoothing out the engine bay, what are you going to do with all the ugly stuff in there? like the cab fan, and the wiper motor? i've been looking at mine, wondering where to hide them. i dont like the way they just stick out in the middle of nowhere!

I believe he is running under dash Air Con so doesn't need a Fan/Heater. Couldn't tell you about the wiper motor... Maybe a remote?

Yep, LX Torry Freak is right. It'll be one of those units they put into hotrods/streetrods. They tuck up under the dash and I'll pipe it to the factory vents so it won't be seen.

The wiper motor (which reminds me, I better put my order in) is a nifty little unit from a company called Specialty Power Windows (google the name and look at the universal kits they have). Its designed to be hidden. They are in the USA but I've contacted them and they will send the unit here no worries :)

I did the same thing on mine...works perfect and blows nice and cold on a hot day. :D

(It blows from the vents on either side of the dash (that used to be fresh air from the plenum) and also made a center vent outlet setup similar to the factory one to have more air there as well.

I had thought about the wiper motor setup, but after reco'ing and detailing the original one I really didn't mind it much...

kp_uc, to answer you question, I'll put the washer bottle and carbon canister under the guards towards the radiator support. It's where most people hide them.

I haven't updated for ages because my employers are trying to work me to death and I can't get a chance to do any Torana fixing. Frustrates the hell outta me!

Here's a few pics from what I did today.........

This dash must go!

Choppy choppy and it's out

Now to put the LX dash in........

Posted Image

Bugger! There's a gap that I've gotta fix. I must have cut out a bit too much

Posted Image

And now to whack my old busted broken dash in to see what a UC looks like with an LX dash in it :)

Posted Image

I'll weld it in next chance I get. I've got other stuff to do today.
Berro, you were right with the dash being an "exact" fit. It's tight as, and I could only get it to fit in by bringing it in through the windscreen.

Anyone want to buy a chopped up UC dash support panel? I'm looking for about $12000 for it so I can buy a 383 chev :)

Great work Kush,

I did tell you it is an exact fit.
I found it frustrating to get the thing to fit. I does make it a lot easier to fit the other dash bits.

I also have a UC dash support panel for sale $11,990. I think your asking too much for yours. Mine also comes with a free set of UC tail lights.

Great work.

Berro

Well bugger me.... I recently butchered one of those R@RE UC dash panels and then sent it off to SIMS Scrap Metal. I'm really kicking myself now! Grrrrr....!!!!

Super work Kush. Love your attitude towards all this. A very light hearted resto this seems. Great reading!

Yeah Notna, it's light hearted because it's a hobby. Well that's what I try to tell my brain....... The other voices that I hear tell me it's an obsession and I should not allow other things in my life get in the way of fixing up this car.....Stupid voices. They have pixie accents, so maybe they are pixies.

Seriously though, I've learnt a lot about myself doing what I've done so far. Something that would have seemed impossible to me a while back, i am now doing. I sometimes find myself looking at the car thinking "wow! How the hell did I even attempt that!"

The good thing about doing this bodywork is that nothing is "hard". Time consuming, yes. Hard, no. It's the brain that says it's hard, until you start doing it. It's been really fun doing this stuff so far :)

Obviously Notna, the last paragraph you know what I'm talking about..... I was just thinking aloud.
