A long time ago I asked myself this question about my Hatch.
The more and more I look, it seems like a big problem.
So tell me. What is the exact fault?
Seems there was a design fault or something they've overlooked or not expected....
blah blah blah!!!
Tell me what you think............ ; )

Something to do with how the 2 panels are joined. Where they overlap the inner edge is unpainted/sealed and therefore rusts from condensation etc.
Im sure this has been discussed in another post with pictures.

When i got mine fixed about 5 years ago now the panelbeater cut the whole section out, so if any moisture got into that section it dripped into the bottom of the rear 1/4's, i wasnt overly happy with that but meh, whats done is done.

Not to mention the water running down from the hinge area

When you look at a new quarter it becomes immediately obvious. Double panel. Same issue with the edges of HQ-WB cowls, HK-HX coupe quarter bottoms (where they overlap the sill) etc.

Comments on the C pillar have come up, but i didn't see an explanation for the rust problem,
I like the new piece one of the members has made. I'd planned on doing exactly same. (folding my own repair section).
It's just a matter of getting ALL the bog out!
Thanks for the replies...

+1
I think the backing plate for the hinge area needs to be redone with a rubber boot to keep the water out.
Foam filling the C and A pillars could be an option for keeping air and water out to prevent rust.
