Might be a chrome thinness issue on the older bars these now being triple plated might be why they crack around the bolts I have seen this before on other bars? Dam Brad your having some issues up there. I am looking forward to having an ale or two with u soon not long now and I will be up your way hope your up for talking Toranas lol. The car looks great can not wait to see it cheers.

IMO for the chrome to crack like that it looks as if something hung up on the bolt, not allowing the bolt to seat correctly, pulling the surface down when tightened.

Or the bolt face or washer on the underside...

All the mounting bolts are NOS items. The bolt is seated fine. The bracket underneath is also fine. None of the other 11 bolts have given an issue and they are all torqued down the same. This crack did not appear straight away, it took approx 3 days to appear.

Its all well and good that they will re-plate it for free, but this is going to drag out over the Xmas break and new year. He initially asked for it to be sent back mid Jan 2013. Who knows what the freight costs will blow out to be....

If I had of been instructed to only do them up finger tight and I didnt and cracked it, well then hey... its my fault Im happy to admit that. But in this case, no one advised me of this..... How am I supposed to know any different? I dont believe this is my fault.

Yes the finish line is near..... thank f uck for that. So sick and tired of being f ucked over, f ucked around and just generally ripped off.

I would be double checking the bracket, bolts, washers nuts etc etc for flatness.

^^^ yeah what davemc said!
With 31,000+ hits your doing something right! I personally would account for a couple of hundred of those as I check in near daily to see
how things are going! It'll be almost sad to see this thread finished.

Brad
All credit to you. I think we are all jealous and bloody envious ! You must be applauded in not only the build but keeping us buggers entertained and informed along the way. Life, work and oh yeah, just happen to be re-building a legend car.
What is also awesome is the interested parties jumping in to lend a hand with parts finding, general info etc - exactly what forum communities like this should be.

Hope you get some time to enjoy it
Not sure the hound will be getting a lift with that trim?

Cheers

I've fitted the new front bar on Purple, i didn't even torque the bolts. Gorilla tight! I have no issues.

Never heard of doing them up finger tight & Loctite? Sounds like BS to me!

I had my front bar rechromed locally can I did them up Gorrilla tight also and no cracks...

Ive even got eye bolts on 2 of the bottom ones to use as tow points as with the front spoiler you cant put the tilt tray cable under the car and even being pulled up onto a tilt tray a few times hasnt caused any dramas

25ft/lbs isnt really all that tight to begin with. I mean the bars are a jacking point so you dont exactly want them loose either?

No way in the world I would be doing bar bolts up finger tight.

so then is he advising you do them different to the way they were built from factory, i can only say the chrome is thinner, this is what i beleive and its my personal thought on that. because no way should they crack, its cracked as obviously there was movement there

i gather there is movement from factory also

Do they have split washers from factory? If so I wouldn't use them if you're only going finger tight, use some good flat ones with plenty of Loctite

I assume the actual bumper is a snug fit over the steel brackets, if there is too much of a gap betwwen the bracket and bumper when you torque the bolts up it will close any gap up and will likely put an uneven force on the crome bumper as a result and contribute to the issue you have. If there they are not snug may be worth adjusting the bracket but would be easier to put a a thin shim or washer as need be between the bumper and the bracket before tightening the bolts.

I've seen plenty of old original bars that are bent out of shape due to hitting something and the chrome was still intact, if they are cracking with a few mm of movement then there is something wrong.

Sounds like the one that cracked, is from there chroming, there end, not any thing you have done Brad, they should pay for freight and fix , but these days, not many Companys have a good heart or xmas spirit, its all about the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$, keep your spirits up Brad, its nearly finished.

Businesses would argue they need money to stay open.....

But my theory is if they do shit right in the first place then it wouldnt be an issue......

Im much like Brad, i'd pay twice as much for an identical item thats correct.......Sadly such an item seems to not exist.

Cheers.

Check your Brackets Brad.

I know that bolting the front bar to the ute actually bent the bar itself, event though it was going back on the same car it came off!

I was under it, tightening the bar iron-chassis bolts, heard a weird noise, jumped out and looked to see it had twisted the bar bracket inside the bar and bent the bar itself!

Could be a similar issue here where bolting it to the car has put extra stress on one bolt and thats caused the crack.

From some of your posts it looks like you actually hate building cars. It's not that bad mate. We all go through it.
