I took my XU1 to work yesterday,I'm trying to get some Ks up on it before next weekends run to Bathurst.Anyway I called in to McDonald's like I do every Saturday morning and have my weekly fix of an egg and bacon roll,a coffee and a quick read of the paper.
There were 2 Highway patrol cars there when I pulled up,they are there also from time to time on Saturdays as well.Anyway I was sitting down just finished my roll and a policeman came up and asked if that was my XU1,I said yes it sure is.Then he asked can we have a look at it.For a split second I thought to myself, hear we go I bet they want to go over it to make sure everything is Legal.I followed the policeman out and they were looking over it and under it.
AS I walked up one of the policeman thats was waiting there said to me,very nice job mate,I said thanks and looked at him strange,he said oh don't worry we just want to have a look at it we love these old cars.So I lifted the bonnet and started showing them the car. After about 10 minutes of talking to them more people came over and were looking and commenting aswell, there were about 10 or so people all up.
One policeman was saying his father that was a cop in the day had one as a patrol car and had photos of it at home,he said he just loved this model.
Anyway it was great to hear there comments and what I was at first thinking was going to be a drama turned out to be a compliment.
Cheers Dane

Good story Dane. This happened to me a fee years back.. Was bored so jumped in the XU1 and drove up to Bathurst to have a walk around the museum.

Just as I entered the Great Western Highway near Bathurst Showground I was wheeled in to an RBT station. It took me twenty minutes to get out of there as they were also very interested - even made me start it up and give it a rev!!!

When I was young I had a well worked mustard LJ S Coupe and one cop even made ne wait by the side of the road while he took it for a drive :-)

When he returned "it goes good" was his comment!!

Similar
Back in the good old /bad old days when the first of the 351 XD cop cars came out there was this cop that i'd had a running battle with -- Terry D was his name
Terry had stickered my GTR numerous times. GTR's in them days had to have weber's and shiney wheels called chromies and according to Terry red, blue and yellow stickers on them and from memory at one stage i might have had all 3
Now Terry wasnt a bad bloke cause if he gave me a red one he always used to drive me home

He pulls me over this one day and i get out thinking here we go again but instead of having the sticker book in hand he wanders over and asks me for a drive, as he had heard through the grapevine that this thing didn't go too bad.

Showing respect to the elders, as Terry was about the same age as me dad i opened the door for him and he started it up and leaving a large amount of rubber behind took off down the road
This cop (with his bloody hat on)caned the car to within an inch of it's life and returned with a big smile on his face. Thanked me - mentioned that "yeah it dont go too bad does it" declined in a policey sort of way my query if i could do the same to the XD and got in his car and with smoke coming off the Fords tyres as he went past --drove off.

Never got another sticker on the Torrie after that and always got a wave if we crossed paths on the road somewhere, much to my mates amazement cause their cars were at home with stickers on them

I spose I had a flash back to about 18 years.I remember one night when I was young and stupid and had my old torana(LJ 2 door S model, had a hot 6 with triple Weber's and direct port nitrous)I went over to the local illegal drags(Kooragang island),the night ended up being a big police blits and they went over every car.The operation started at about 10pm and I finally was aloud to go at about 2am in the morning with 5 defect notices in my hand.Anyway I remember getting about 5ks from my home and was pulled up again and before the policeman could say anything I was waving the defect slips out of the window. The police said oh have we been a naughty boy tonight have we.And I said I have had enough tonight and just want to get home.In which he did let me go.

great stories guys....I had the exact same thing as CraigA happen to me but here in wagga. Had a cop run the length of the RBT line while i was being breath tested and check every dimension of the car before chatting about toranas for about 15mins. even moved the cones out so cars could go around me while he chatted.

I got pulled up in the Truckster this arvo for a breathtest.
Too low,Too wide,too loud.Expired rego sticker,illegible license,yadayadayada.
All were commented on but I was sent on my way none the poorer.
I think it has a lot to do with driver attitude sometimes.
The copper was a real pleasant guy as well.Cheers, mate, you made my day.

What a great end to a great day, cruising about in the Sunshine burning up dinosaur juice.

Life is great!:buttrock:

Soon after I got the statey a heap of me mates traveled up to Christchurch for a rock concert. On the way to the gig I got pulled up my a few of the local boys in blue and started asking me what we were doing (apparantly someone had called in about a car load of guys pissing in the bushes, it wasnt us), he was real cagey on me as the number plate was ran through the system. Hell if I was a cop I would have been! Matt black v8 holden full of a car load of half drunk fellas, once he realised I was legit he was asking all about the Q and what my plans were. After a brief chat I was sent on my merry way.

My old boss (I worked in at a mechanics for a bit) told me that one of the local constables pranged one of the brand new XD cop cars showing off to his mates one night (rest of them in the car had 'had a few'). Got in a wee bit of trouble for that one

I have had a lot of experience with coppers and cars over the years. All but one time the experience has been good. I think attitude has a lot to do with it. Mind you most Traffic cops love their cars too..

I havent had to many hassles either , a few RBT's and just a quick look over and chat and pretty much sent on my way so i agree with WOT179, attitude goes a long way. Locally the coppers put on a show every year and they are pretty cool and into cars.

When i had my XU1 years ago i got pulled up one night. Popped the bonnet and got told that my car must be illegal because of the triple strombergs, chrome rocker cover , exhaust noise etc.
The copper was only very young and obviously didn't have a clue. After a fair bit of negotiation he agreed that if i could give him proof it was standard he wouldn,t defect me.
So the next night i rolled into the local station and proudly showed him my copy of Fiv's book and my GMH letter of authenticity.
A couple of the older cops there who were in the know got a big laugh out of that.

I have had a few to many experiences for my liking but having a hot car in a small town everyone knows everything and stories get exaggerated. But as I got older less and less trouble, most of the time for me it was young cops out to prove how bad arsed they could be

As noted by a forum member

I was once a young hoon in a hot car

now

I am an old fart in a vintage car

I'd have to disagree - most - not all but most coppers from the Traffic Branch/Highway Patrol, TMU or whatever you want to call it (depending where you live), are no different to you - what attracts them to the branch are the cars and bikes - heck I know guys who joined the coppers solely because they couldn't afford to buy whatever was the pursuit motorcycle or car at the time. So again, a majority of the traffic blokes are keenly interested in the cars, have a pretty good knowledge of some models, perhaps own some themselves, or in the very least they often appreciate the care, effort and expense in restoring them. Mind you, cut any corners, especially taking the cheap way to modify and that outlook changes.

Great to hear the positive stories for once - another big difference I've noticed between GHM-Torana and LS1 forums...

Cheers, TB

Most of my cars havent caught the eye of the Constabulary, been pulled over for RBT's etc and i did have one big run in with a copper, he followed me for about 5km and pulled me over right outside the cop shop, he reckons i was being a smart arse ( i wasn't ) and threatened to take my licence and the car etc etc, but then said it was to much paper work for him and to get the car towed home and he would be around in the morning to see the tow receipt, which he never did come in for.

Some cops are real wankers, but i think the good ones far outweigh the wankers.

I, like most have had encounters with both types regarding the boys in blue.
One of the funniest ones that i still smile about was the young copper (dead set straight out of the academy and very young) who went over my car with a fine tooth comb. He couldnt really find anything and i think he was super keen to book me for anything basically. Then when he looked under the bonnet he saw the small hole that was cut for the air cleaner to go through. (The car was on LPG and i had the mixer on top of the carby then air cleaner on top) The car had a bonnet scoop so no dramas. But he was not impressed at all, went "Ahaa" and pulled out the pad.
As he was about to start writing i asked what the problem was and he said, and i quote "That is very dangerous, someone could get their head stuck in there." i actually burst out laughing as i thought he was taking the piss, but he wasnt. I then asked him if he could get his head in there? I said "Maybe if you sat on top of the motor and i closed the bonnet on you, you might get your head in there. But even yours would go through and not get stuck." After a brief pause the pad went away and i got the "Take the car straight home." speech.
Clearly i enjoyed the rest of my drive that time, actually passing him again about 20 minutes later, no problem.
Always makes me smile.

well apart from some horrible encounters, and just for the record im always honest and polite as i know just how far smartasses get.

but this one time i got pulled over in the mustang with my dad and the missus. i thought oh crap power restrictions. just acted normal and apologised for breaking the law. copper said he didnt care about the car only pulled me over for a broken headlight. asked me to take a breath test.

jumped out the car, copper sparked up a smoke and had a 10 minute chat about v8's. funny point was that the breath tester kept reading positive for alcohol, after i assured him i wasnt drinking he quite literally chucked it in the glovebox and slammed the lid.

good times

Like everyone else I have had the good and the bad
I was a V6 Capri driving young hoon
Now a Subaru suburbian(mostly)

Even got let off for being airborne as I passed a cop getting into his car followed by a sideways powerslide from a 4th to 2nd deco lockup.

Still fondly remember being pulled up by an earlier model commodore - for no reason other than to have a sticky beak cause he used to own one - and then got challenged to a race down coal and candle creek road on the northern beaches
No-one got killed somehow and I got a strobe of the lights and a wave out the window -it was a tie

There are still some bad seeds on the force - but they are slowly going the way of the dodo

BTW - I have a lot of respect for cops that have respect for "us" - My sister is a Sergeant - and I have seen both sides
